I was pretty underwhelmed by the video. The tyres were clearly working very hard, there wasn't much understeer and it cornered flat enough, but it didn't look fast like say a GT2 or even a GT3. It just seemed heavy (which of course it is) and a bit of a struggle to get through the corners.

Maybe I'm expecting too much, it is a 2 1/2 tonne car after all. Or perhaps I can't get the 919 out of my head :)
Oh.

I found the video humorous. It was entertaining on how it revealed the weaknesses of the all-American electric muscle car.

Edit: oh, you meant the Nurburgring video. lol. nvm. watch the throttle house one for fun or want to poke fun at teslas.

This is quick - for a heavy car. So, now the fastest EV is a fraction of a second faster than a Cayenne (7:33.9)?, yet still 4 seconds slower than a Panamerra ? . I can't get excited about that. I love my Taycan for host of reasons - but lap times is not one of them.
This isn't quick.
This is ridiculously fast!
Try a lap under 10 minutes and I'll hand over the papers of my car to you.
Besides, 4 seconds between the Panamera and the Taycan means only 0,88% difference in lap time!
That's just hitting one curb or not!
Honestly, this lap time is ridiculously fast for an EV! (yes, I'm excited ?).

Yes, the Throttle House guys one was fun - they don't hold back exposing any gremlins. I hadn't realised until recently that Teslas have Brembo brakes, which don't seem to be up to the job on the Plaid.

Meanwhile, the brakes on any Porsche just work, time after time, road or track!

I love my Taycan Turbo and love to see great lap times , but..

The kit, it encompasses new 21-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires while the Porsche 4D Chassis Control gets a software update. Customers can order the Taycan Turbo S with this upgrade through Porsche Tequipment, but only in Germany for the time being.

Priced at €13,377, the pack is available strictly for the 2023 Taycan Turbo S of which production kicked off at the end of last month. The kit is a retrofit that will be installed on cars after the owner takes delivery
I wish they would have used a real stock taycan turbo s -- the performance package seems a bit like a trick to put on race tires. The fun of the nurnbergring "production cars" times is that we can actually get such cars ourselves; the moment the manufacturers can modify the cars with special tires/brakes/etc then it becomes meaningless (eg. we can just use a 919 evo :p ). I feel that Porsche is really pushing it in this case for what a "production car" is... ah well :)

it's nice to see that a $240,000 EV is faster than a $160,000 EV by 2 seconds (0.44% faster for 50% more cost)…with a rare an unobtainable (performance package) in the hands of a pro drive…

but they didn't publish what I wanted to know and would be illuminating…

consumption
battery temps

because I promise you it used way more than 50% of available battery, and it was in "overheat" battery thermals on the back straight…

My instructor at Porsche Track Event Masters Nurburgring on Aug 1/2 is a mechanical engineer with Porsche (9 years) - we discussed the Taycan and EV's in general...

he said "teasing" a ring lap out of the Taycan was "difficult" - between battery consumption and battery thermals - the lap is only barely achievable and it took a lot of work and trials

based on my actual experience tracking the Taycan it's way better than a Model S and much more capable - but on par with a Model 3 with some post factory upgrades applied to the model 3 - but it's no track car and can't do a full day at full pace even with fast charging at the track...

I love to drive my Taycan _TO_ the track, and track a proper vehicle, and then drive my Taycan "home" from the track - there is no better combination. But tracking the Taycan itself is simple an exercise in frustration and limitations - it does well for a 5,100 lbs sports sedan - but it's no track car.

another awkward/ironic/harlious thing also would be the _ONLY_ fast charging anywhere near the Nurburgring is the 4 stall Tesla Superchargers in the parking lot of the Lindner Nurburgring Motorsport Hotel - I know I used them last week for my rental Model 3 (200 kW charge rate for the win!!)

so either Porsche hauled their Semi-truck fast charging rig to the track (plausible) or _IF_ this particular charger has been enabled by Tesla for non-Tesla use - Porsche may have topped off the Taycan using the near by Tesla V3 Superchargers - hopefully they sprang for the $460 400V/150 kW charging option so they were not limited to 50 kW @ the V3 200 kW Tesla Supercharger…

This is great stuff. But it's all about bragging rights in a defined universe where a car with 75% of the power of one car beats the other around the track. So which is the better car? With costs included and costs excluded.

(And if I understand this right, the Plaid doesn't have overboost, just 1000 hp up to 200 mph while the S is probably doing the run at quite a bit less hp as the highest hp only happens for a few seconds at the start.)

The color and density of the trees' leaves did not look like it is done in August. It is only me?

Better buy a Panamera Turbo which is 4 seconds faster than a Taycan Turbo S....?
Saves you €13K...

I still find it impressive, that a car with around 25% less power, 10% more weight and around 18% less top speed - still beats its rival in a long distance lap. This is not just a marginal differential IMO.

I am also impressed that top end ICE cars (including other Porsches) with around 20% more top speed than a Taycan and a LOT less weight - are only a few seconds faster over such a long lap.

I know track times do not have much direct relevance to daily driving - but it is reassuring to know that you will be (hopefully soon for me), enjoying such engineering excellence.......

just my 2cents

Exactly.
If you care to take a look at the numbers it's an impressive record.
Some people don't understand this, unfortunately.
It's great to see Porsche didn't give up but thought of a way to beat the Plaid.

Now, to put things in perspective: those tires are the main reason this record could be set.
To call it a "production car" the package must be obtainable for customers....
It's just a "clever" way to use racing tires (Pirelli P Zero Corsa), nothing more, nothing less.
Maybe a tweak in performance software which raises the topspeed/torque, who knows...
And, selling that package, make a profit too, win/win.
A set of those Corsas is about €1600 so...
If the Plaid put those tires on it would be quicker, I'm sure.
So let's enjoy this record for as long as it stands! ?
