I cruise at 30-40 over almost every day on a stretch of freeway near me. And I’m barely passing cars at that speed. Memo to not move to Switzerland.
And I assume that's mph not kph?

I'm the same. Commute at between 80-95mph. Limit ranges from 55-65mph.
If I see a police car I obviously slow down (to about 10 over), but never had a ticket.

Oh that's a lovely law!

I came up behind a Tesla on the motorway the other day. He was in the far left lane (fast lane) and there were three open lanes to his right. I flashed my lights for him to move, but he just stayed and didn't change speed. So I just moved right to pass him. He then put his foot down hard to try to stop me. I am like a small child, so I put my foot down hard also and obviously left him behind.

It amused me that his silly game didn't work with a Taycan. Hopefully he will drive better, but probably not.
That’s a very interesting point; I didn’t know it was envisaged under laws, maybe Switzerland has a similar concept.

when the cop made me sign the violation notice I politely asked him to note on the document that I was overtaking and was forced to speed because of the circumstances. He noted it and said that the judge gets a video from the speed gun. Not sure if the judge will watch it and not sure it will show that the guy overtaken was accelerating as he was dead on.

I’ve been told not to contest and show up in court unless the judge gives more than minimum fine and driving ban. They get annoyed quickly from everyone claiming innocence and usually increase length of ban… so I’ll just leave as is and hope the judge is understanding

London is packed with speed cameras and other traffic enforcement cameras + most roads in the central parts are 20 mph. In other words, not a particularly fun environment to make best use of a sports car.

With that said, plenty of fun countryside roads outside the city to enjoy ones Taycan on, especially during the summer!

Yeah, I got a camera ticket in central London last year. 4 mph over. Bloody annoying!

That seems exceedingly harsh. Is it not worth pleading your case?
It sounds like you sped up in the interest of safety and the truck driver who was driving well under the posted limit chose a poor time to speed up. Dashcams can sometimes come in handy in situations like these.

This is why I always have Waze running - I set it to ding at me when im 10 over the limit and other people usually tag the cops - i do all the time (for the points!! need more points!) Its social engineered protection :) Plus if there are other dangers people tag them.

Speeding enforcement in the US is a travesty.

Speed limits mostly set artificially low, then plenty of “cushion” given. But one never knows where exactly the cushion ends and enforcement will begin!

IMO it would be safer and better for everyone involved if the limits were set realistically and enforcement began at that speed.

That’s unlikely to ever happen though because…?, and because we’ve been doing things this way for too long!

The cultural difference between compliance with and enforcement of rules between the US and Austria/Germany/Switzerland could not be much bigger. I have lived on the border (Konstanz) and seen myself.

Sorry to the OP and certainly understand. Could be possible to challenge, but I understand why one might not do so.

As much as it sounds harsh, if a rule is worth having in the first place, enforcing it is good because it achieves the desired impact. Even the discussion here will make everyone think twice about speeding in Switzerland. If it is not worth enforcing, then it should be eliminated or changed.

The worst is when you have a rule that is selectively enforced (e.g., speeding in the US), because that leads to discriminatory results and abuse. In the US, some of us never get tickets even when speeding well over the limits, while others will be ticketed for what technically is a violation (e.g., 5 mph over) but typically never enforced . . .

In Missouri we say “9 you’re fine, 10 your mine” as they don’t write tickets for less than 10 over (that I’m aware of). Tickets are also cheap and easy to fix (reduce to non-moving violation).

Although I haven’t gotten one in a long time (>10 years) because I do typically keep it within 10.

Thats not the case in all states though. I got a ticket for 5 over in Michigan once. I called around to several attorneys and they all basically said tickets don’t get fixed.

Sorry to hear. I too got caught overtaking 72km/h on a 50km/h limit road in Switzerland (I had missed the sign and thought it was still 80km/h limit). License gone 3 months and a four figure total fine. I always stay within the limits and have little sympathy for people speeding… BUT I do not get the law when it comes to overtaking.

Hope you get a mild verdict and are soon back on the road in your Taycan :like:

Sorry to hear OP. Bad luck but could have been so much worse. this country has an obsession for "punishing" traffic to great levels, in spite of supercars density akin to Montecarlo.

The police sometimes mark the position of the car wheels with chalk in public paid parking spaces. If the car is not moved at the end of the maximum time allowed but money is added to extend the parking time (nachbezahlen), the police look at the marks on the ground -> fine

A friend drove at 134 km/h over 80 (in an F12 TdF) in the mountains. 2 years licence ban, exotic fine and after 1.5 years compulsory examination with a psychologist. If you don't pass the exam the ban increases :)

Repeat offenders *will* go to jail at some point.

Yeah I was surprised to read that there’s no speed enforcement in Austin. When I lived there for college and a couple years afterwards, I saw many speed traps. The worst one was they were zapping drivers from an overpass and radio down to a waiting trooper further down the freeway.

Harsh, I’m not even sure we have police in Austin TX anymore. Not policing traffic speeds anyway.
Funny you say that ... after having driven a 911, Boxster, and Taycan for years at "extra-legal" speeds around Austin, I finally got caught speeding on the SH-45 tollway. 101 MPH (162 km/h) in a 75 MPH (120 km/h) zone. Too fast to do defensive driving / traffic school to dismiss the ticket, so the case is with a traffic lawyer now. ?
