EDITED: Additional detailed info from Porsche notice posted on NHTSA website:
Chronology :
In Dec. 2020 Porsche became aware of reports that the charging cables for certain Taycan vehicles would become hot during vehicle charging. Porsche investigated this issue and determined that the charging cable worked properly when new, but when used in connection with certain non-recommended lower quality electrical outlets, the cable could become damaged.
In May 2022, Porsche notified owners and implemented a service campaign (WMP2) with a software modification to reduce the default charging capacity of the cables by 50% to address this issue. Further information, recommendations, and cautions were provided regarding the appropriate electrical sockets to use.

In June 2023, Porsche became aware of further instances of overheating in Taycan charging cables, even with the power reduction. Porsche investigated this issue and determined that, even though the NEMA plug in the charging cable meets UL household use criteria, if it is used with a lower quality electrical receptacle, it can become permanently damaged, such that even when used with a recommended outlet, there could be elevated electrical resistance. More specifically, the connector crimps in the cable could be damaged due to overheating, leading to further increased electrical resistance and elevated temperatures. Porsche further determined that a new plug with an incorporated temperature sensor would eliminate this issue.

In late 2023, upon further review of the issue and the latest field data, Porsche identified 110 incidents of mobile charger malfunctions attributable to the subject issue. On December 6, Porsche determined that it would supersede the WMP2 Service Campaign and conduct a safety recall to replace the subject mobile chargers.

Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production :
The charging plug with sensors was incorporated into production in Calendar Week 48 of 2023

I got the same recall regarding my wife’s Audi Q4.

finally - but I'll be disappointed if we get a new power supply cable w/thermal sensor but they keep the crappy and barely adequate 10 AWG wire vs. and improved 8 or 6 AWG wire reducing nominal operating temperatures

this makes sense for them prior to the release of a potentially popular and high volume Macan EV - going to market with their existing north american EVSE and it's known problems and the Macan EV demographic might've been a painful exercise…

I'll be interested to see exactly what changes are in the new Power supply cable.

3 1/2 years late, but I guess better than never - 4 years total if delivery mid-2024 is accurate…
Dave, I imagine you've posted this info. elsewhere but if you don't mind repeating ... what cable charging system did you switch to one you became aware of this problem?

I'm rocking Tesla Gen3 Wall Chargers (one J-1772, one Tesla unit, one universal unit) - 3 Tesla Wall Chargers in a powersharing configuration sharing 100 amp circuit

used it last night to charage:
  1. my son's 2022 Model Y
  2. my 2020 Taycan
  3. my wife's 2021 Cayenne Hybrid
the Tesla Universal Wall Connector is a strong product offering for $600 given value/features/quality/functionality

others that have excellent usage are:

chargepoint, wall box, juice box, enphase/clippercreek, autel

virtually _ANYTHING_ other than the Porsche EVSE's are an excellent choice in North America.

The complaint but it reads like whiny, be it polite, child - perhaps a recent Harvard grad. I couldn’t help but notice that the complaint failed to mention that Porsche offered $600 for an alternate mobile EVSE, and that the Porsche mobile EVSE can still be safely operated at 50% (definitely not ideal, but is a valid safety mitigation).
Hmmm. Let's see.
Data (with supporting temperature measurements) about Porsche EVSEs overheating surfaced at least by July, 2020, and was reported to Porsche by @daveo4EV.

Three and a half years later, December, 2023, Porsche announced a recall of its EVSEs.

Almost four years later, May, 2024, 'whiny' complaint to submitted to NHTSA that Porsche still has not provided its recall solution.

Porsche is such a victim here.

Porsche is not a victim here. They provided a crappy, but safe workaround until they can provide a permanent solution by confirming charging at 20A is safe. The $600 towards a new mobile EVSE makes is somewhat more reasonable. Sure, the workaround is a hassle and undesirable, but NHTSA does not deal with undesirable solutions. For example, when Tesla refused to replace yellowing screens, it did not fall under the scope of NHTSA because the screens were still clearly readable, just ugly yellowing instead of white. So I'm not defending Porsche, just that the complaint just sounds completely out of place, and yes, whiny.

Having had various recalls on cars over the years, it's not uncommon for them to take time. This is not even that bad, imagine being stuck for months unable to trade your car into a dealer who would love to give you good money for your car but cannot sell it due to an unresolved recall which might not even have a determined solution - this happened to me once with a Toyota, resulted in me losing a couple of grand on trade value because no Toyota dealer would touch it and recall said the permanent solution has not even been identified at that time, no workaround or compensation was given, just a warning that the power sliding van door might open by itself while driving.

My guess is that every single complaint filed with NHTSA - valid or not - gets much more visibility and consideration within the Porsche business than numerous owner posts on online forums.

Shall we auto-post all posts from this forum which express dissatisfaction with the product or the company to NHTSA? ;)

It wasn't until 'hundreds' of UK facebook posts about failed Taycan heaters got reported first in a UK major newspaper and later the story made German business equivalent of Wall Street Journal that Porsche executives took significant action about the heaters. So non-auto trade newspapers and safety regulators are what really counts.

In consumer products, rule of thumb was that for every complaint telephoned/mailed in to company about a product, 7 or so other consumers who had the same complaint just chose to buy a different product.

From what I see here in the last couple of years, most Taycan owners are extremely patient/forgiving about product deficiencies, including safety-related problems, except for posting about them here.

Apparently getting a nice loaner while the Taycan is in the shop forgives all Porsche sins.

Yes, my Macan loaner was extremely clean. The 4-cyl engine was a bit wheezy but it was probably my fault for not using Sport mode and a heavy foot. The 'Porsche' puddle lights more than made up for it, though.
