Being married doesn't help if you aren't and engineer, physicist or scientist. The understanding of the Porsche charging system design & architecture was not design by people with the sole background that they are married. LOL!
I just came back from my dealer and addressed this my salesman. He had never seen the Porsche Service Bulletin talking about 125v charging only in emergencies. I wasn't surprised. They don't want to lose any sale. What do you expect when a sales guy only makes a maximum of $300 per car he sells...
I have but remember I was trying to make sense of all the issues identified on the Taycan batteries. One by one with information from people on the site which have had experience with this issues I was able to determine what issues are still present & which ones were resolved by Porsche.
Simply...
It does appear after my discussion with my Porsche service tech that it is possible that their standard charging module could overcharge a battery cell to cause a runaway condition if you use low & slow charging at 125v. He is told by his management that 125v charging is only for emergencies...
Yes they are. Better safe than sorry. It appears the majority of the fires have happened with multiple day 125v charging so I will follow their advice since I don't want to take any chances.
How many miles do you get per hour of charging at 125v? I'm not sure if what it is for 8A or 10A that...
That is true but Porsche still advised me to not charge at 125v for more than 12 hours in emergencies only regardless if I use a dedicated 20A circuit with zero issues of overload. They only advise the use of level 2 charging at 220V -250V for daily charging. They told me this morning "No...
What an ass. You have a problem with someone asking legitimate questions in this forum as a new owner of a Taycan for a week seeking to determine if numerous Taycan reports of fire & battery issues have any merit and if so were addressed by Porsche. I appreciate the inputs of helpful people on...
Fantastic information! Thank you so much. Luckily for my wife and I this is one of 4 vehicles so it won't likely get driven more than 150 miles per week and sit for weeks to months when we travel.
Your real world experience has been extremely helpful.
Thank you so much for this additional service bulletin!
I didn't see this one but it shows the software update increased the level of charging of the 12v battery to increase the time the vehicle can sit in storage mode. It also is careful to identify if you connect to the car too often while...
Well, at least now we have the facts directly from Porsche stating they don't advise charging at 125v for more than 12 hours and only in an emergency. Daily use should be avoided.
Pretty simple.
Most of the fires of Taycans happened in cases where they were charging far more than 12 hours at...
I did find a Porsche service bulletin.
Directly from this service bulletin:
197/21 ENU WMP2 dated Sept 1st, 2022.
Porsche strongly advises against using the 125v charging cable on a daily basis. They obviously realize it's use at 125v will damage the main battery leading to diminished...
Thanks, I will find out from Porsche tomorrow what the cost to replace an individual module which has 12 cells as well as the cost to replace a single cell which I was already told by my dealer that Porsche designed the battery pack to do.
I also need to find out what happens when a cell fails...
Thanks for the info. Can you point me in the direction of articles which disprove what the supposed "whistleblower" said? I understand how Porsche could have designed their batteries to have excess capacity which can be accessed for adding capacity lost due to age or failure. This is just smart...
Please direct me toward the information which debunks the information I have found on the Taycan forum as well as the information found in the recent Taycan recalls as recent as Sept/2023.
I'm just looking for facts. If some of the information is incorrect that I'm being given I'm happy to be...
This is what was reported by a Porsche whistleblower from Germany:
"The Porsche whistleblower explained that the Tacan's 800V high-voltage onboard charger used today does not control the charging process well enough and can overcharge some battery cells, causing them to overheat. For safety...
Thanks, that's great information. I found a Porsche thread for proper battery customer maintenance to always have the battery charged to at least 50% before letting it sit for weeks. This I can do if it will keep the main battery in the best condition. I just wish the dealer would tell me...
I'm finding out more information about the main & 12v batteries.
It appears the 12v battery may no longer need to be trickle charged after a software update but the main battery has unresolved issues which evidently Porsche is hiding from Taycan owners.
I found out the reason they have you...
This is coming from a story based on a declarations from a Porsche whistleblower from Porsche in Germany. I will hopefully get the straight story from my
Porsche dealer tomorrow...
Thanks for the input. I'm going back to the Porsche dealer on Monday to try to get some answers. The fire risk on the main battery due to the cheap battery management charger still used in the Taycan is a big concern.
I'm told the 12v lithium ion battery is used to run the electronics on the car. If this battery dies then the car is dead.
Pretty silly that an EV with a 74kW main battery must rely on a single 12v battery for its brain with no backup to the main battery which would only require a DC to DC...
