4S maxed out at 154 MPH

Finally got a chance to go all out. The 154mph is expected but getting there was the unknown. The car pulled hard right up to 150 then the computer kicked in and regulated the acceleration slowly to 154. So solid, smooth and eerie (hearing the wind instead of a turbo V8). It would have been nice to get a little more out of her but for all intents and purposes 154 is fast enough.

I wonder if that is the true speed? My Odometer is at least 3 mph fast. I'm not sure if it gets progressively worse as the speed increases? I've checked it several times with radar and it's consistantly off by 3 mph plus.

I drove the southern part of that toll road back when it opened and thought it was superb. Hard not to drive below 100 on it (you’d be holding up other traffic). The northern part of the toll road with the 80mph limit I drive a few times each year and is a different story. Not sure if it’s poor design, no maintenance or our shifting clay soil, but it’s complete trash - hard to go much over 80 due to pot holes, gaps with bridges, unmarked merging lanes and no/low banking - and patrolled heavily.

The US could never pull off a proper autobahn due to the sheer miles of roads and lack of funds to properly maintain roads.

You're probably right but I would like to think that one of those poor, barren states like Kansas or Nebraska could turn parts of I70 or I80 into a toll and charge a large sum to speed freaks like me and make it work...

A heavy toll would eliminate the majority of people that don't belong. Plus, pay for upgrades, PSA's, etc...
I'm probably being niave but at least show me why it can't work.

Totally. But pick a state with less inclement weather that will require less maintenance. Ie convert a section of road outside the palm desert or near Vegas.

On the autobahn there are speed restrictions at junctions, sensibly, so nobody is likely to be going very quick were traffic is exiting or entering, you may even get reported to the police by another motorist if you exceed them by much.
Driving in Germany my experience is people do stick to the speed limits pretty much.

In the event you were referring indirectly to my comment, I was referring to speed limits in the US, where nobody drives exactly the speed limit. I was not suggesting that drivers on the autobahn routinely ignore the speed limits that seemingly are more ubiquitous on the autobahn with the passage of each year.

Many drivers in the US think that having no limits would be the ideal. My point was that while having no limit is fun at times, it also brings its own stresses and dangers, particularly due to speed differentials, and that it can actually be more stressful driving on a road with no speed limits -- even with better trained drivers -- than driving on a road with a speed limit that, even if not strictly obeyed, tends to focus driving around a particular speed point. The ideal limit is, of course, open to debate.

Haven't had a chance to go over 120mph here in the US in my CT but recall hitting the speed limiter on my new M4 convertible in 2014 on the autobahn from Munich to Switzerland at ca 164 mph Have to say the car was as smooth as silk.

Just returned yesterday from Germany on a vacation trip and pushed my rental again on the autobahn to 145 - forgot how much fun that is

I did 165 in my Panamera 4S 2018, 176 in my BMW Alpina, Have a Taycan Turbo now, its so quick , im still amazed with that, I have not maxed it out yet, coming soon at a HWY near you!

haha, must have jinxed myself. Just got my first photo ticket in about a decade for doing 65mph in a 40mph zone. Must have been a portable unit. Pure money grab as placed on a freeway where no entering/exiting traffic and no reasonable possibility for pedestrians or wildlife. I'm actually all for speed and stop sign cameras so long as they (1) are accurate; and (2) are placed with the intent of making known danger areas safer. I don't care much for the cash grabs when miscalibrated or placed in areas where there are no material safety issues. oh well.

Do these photo tickets go on your driving record as in points? When we used to have those red light cameras, they didn't affect ours. So, it was still better than getting caught by an actual officer.

No. It would not survive judicial challenge if it went to an individual’s license such that it had an impact on insurance. Rather, it is sent to the vehicles owner(s) who sort it out with the actual driver. So yes, it is far better than ticket from an officer.

With you there. I can drive safely over the speed limit more so than someone driving at/under the speed limit while on their phone.

I did! Which was why I think it must have been a mobile unit.

And speaking of which, the best impact on safety is when these are highly visible and widely known to everyone so that it changes behavior.

I don't know what good other than gathering revenue the hidden cameras bring . . .
