Got a call from SSEN to tell me they are coming out next Monday to start to unloop my house. Applied for this to be done Sep the good thing is it will be done before I get my CT.
Forgot to say all the digging is going to be done in next doors garden.

As a yankee on the other side of the pond (who quickly just googled this) it seems to have something to do with how electricity is wired between houses in the UK. Either that and/or it’s a Matrix related issue and he should have taken the blue pill.

I think... some houses in UK don't have a dedicated electric supply, it instead comes into one house then passes to another, and as a result they sometimes share a 100amp fuse, or they have a lower than 100amp fuse each. In the UK, you ideally need a dedicated 100amp fuse for an ev charger. So 'unlooped' could be the installation of a dedicated supply and 100amp fuse.

Got it. We have no neighbours and on 3 phase 36KW capacity. The advantages of rural France.

Northern Powergrid refused to unloop me unless I paid the full amount for the work (thousands). My electrician did a full survey and calculated maximum use. Charger is backed down to 6kw and has a load sensor fitted which lowers the draw even further if the overall supply load goes too high. To be honest, Powergrid were anything but helpful and caused a lot of unnecessary stress.

Luckily the neighbours don’t have an EV. I don’t know what will happen if they choose to get one.

SSEN carry out all the work for no cost to me as they told me they have money put aside for this work.

That’s unfortunate. I’ve read of folks not only getting the work done for free (admittedly with WP/National Grid) but also a 3-phase upgrade as part of the bargain…

Seems like of all the DNOs that Northern Powergrid are the most awkward about getting supplies unlooped.

In France if 3 phase is available you can have it for a fixed fee of 160 euros. This is what it cost me in December 2022. We now have the capacity to go to 36kw for the house. We are currently on 24kw and was on 12kw single phase before the switch.

I was led to believe (especially in rural France) that 3-phase connections were pretty much the norm.

Total diametric opposite to the UK / which is single phase connection to domestic by default (even though low voltage three-phase is running past the property). Think it was a cost saving measure in postwar Britain when they were expanding the grid and every penny counted.

Yes if the building has had some farm use. Otherwise in will be mono phase with a max on 12 KVA so we had not choice. But luckily 3 phase is usually available and this fixed price scheme is good. We now have 3 phase for the house and garage. So I'll be charging at 11kw if I ever get my car that is. Delivery has just been put back 2 weeks presumably due to the heater shortages.

I feel for you. I got caught up in the various delays, 12v battery etc. last year. You’ll smile when you get it. Worth the wait ?

Thanks I hope so. I'd prefer a delay to get the new improved heater anyway. I'm planning for Ezrly April thn if it's earlier then it's a bonus.
