This has happened to me once. There were faults found in the history. CTI4 has stated it is likely a failing current sensor in the front motor cntrol electronics. The dealer said I likely need a new front motor control unit but could not reproduce the failure after beating on the car for a week. I hope this effort will result in a recall. I share your fear this could happen when I'm in the left lane on a freeway.

Wow, is this problem more prevalent than people know or a rare issue?

I don't know. The car felt like it had square wheels, you know almost like Fred Flintsone.
