Hello,

I have a UK CT4. I am confused by the power ratings - when I look on the Porsche online portal for my car, it states "Overboost power with Launch Control up to 350kW/476hp" - What does this mean?

I don't think I have Launch Control (when I put the car into sports mode, left foot foot on the break, floor the right, nothing comes up on the dash).

So do I have 'overboost' or launch control? If so how do I access it?

Thanks!

All cars have launch control and activated with Sport mode in the manner you've described.

- vehicle at a standstill
- readiness for operation established (i.e. powered on!)
- vehicle at operating temperature
- battery charged sufficiently
- steering wheel positioned straight ahead
- D selected
- SPORT or SPORT PLUS mode selected
- Press brake pedal with left foot
- Quickly press accelerator fully and hold down - a message will appear on the instrument cluster
- Release the brake pedal within a short space of time, car will accelerate to the max
- Locate change of underwear and proceed to...

How new is your car / how many miles one the clock / what state of charge did you have when attempting?

Overboost is the temporary increase in power when in launch mode. You have this as part of launch control by default.

Many thanks for that!

Car is 1 week old, about 500 miles on it, and the batter was 40% I think when I tried it, I will try again this evening.

Steering wheel straight ahead. Good they thought about that. Would give some nasty surprises.

Tried launch control for first time on CT4 and was a bit underwhelmed. It didn’t feel any quicker than slamming my foot on the throttle pedal (aka the “gas”).

Are there any best practices for SoC, battery temp, etc to keep in mind?

I was at 67% SoC, battery was 72* F, in sport+ mode and the launch control message showed before letting go of the brake.

I was able to test launch control again this evening and it seemed a bit quicker.

Off the line, it lacks the quick bite and punch I’d expect from 470+hp. The torque seems to be throttled until the car hits around 30, then it bolts. I’d gamble 0/5-30 is slower than 30-60. It still seems to be the same power output without LC active.

I’m only at 500 miles on the odometer - is there an unofficial break-in period before all capabilities are enabled?

CT 4 is not aiming for drag race...for the punch you should have gone for a Turbo or TurboS.....or a Plaid.
not even 4S we are talking a 2.3 + tons car or tank here...

Electric motors are nothing like IC engines.
An IC engine has a fairly narrow power speed band and a fixed maximum power curve, and if you try to take more than the rated power out of it it stalls, so it needs both a clutch and multi-ratio gearbox to be any use in a car.

An electric motor produces torque from stationary and if you take more than the rated power out of it is starts to heat up, so you need neither a clutch nor a multi ratio gearbox and you can take more than the steady state rated power out of it for a short time, up to the point it reaches a temperature limit.
How long this could be will depend on ambient temperature and the recent duty cycle of the motor as well as how much extra power is used.

I don't know how sophisticated the control of "over-boost" is on the Taycan, it may be anything from a fixed time based on known rate of cooling or it could be intelligently controlled using temperature sensors etc.

The thing is, my guess is that you get a degree of "over-boost" every time you use full throttle not just for launch but it is just a guess...
I hope so anyway because I will never use launch control but I will use full throttle. When my order eventually shows up.

I understand that those would give more oomph but the launch seems to be intentionally subdued. My 440hp Panamera throws you off the line with LC - it’s somewhat violent - while the CT4 kinda takes it’s sweet time. The torque when flooring the car from a steady 60mph is more apparent than when using LC.

Tried the launch again today - battery at 80% and ambient temp is quite a bit warmer, not sure if that’s a factor. The car squatted more and seemed to get off the line quicker. The launches are very inconsistent so far and I would love to figure out right combo of factors that need to come together for an ideal launch.

I've had my Taycan for a month now and I have not used Launch control yet, lol. I keep forgetting.

It’s way less dramatic than an ICE car - no revving or high volume engine sound and no wheel spin on the three launches I’ve done so far - which makes it easier to execute without drawing much attention to yourself. Def worth trying. Please report back!

I'm coming from a Tesla, so there was no launch control. But we do have it in our X4 M40i and yeah I guess the sound from the engine does help! Will def try tonight after work :D
