Volvo and also BMW and probably others had an auxiliary little engine (Webasto) running on fuel out of the main tank. I had this on one of my BMW. Same as now on the BEV / PHEV I could pre heat the car. It was also active when starting the car at cold temperatures to heat up the engine and car itself. But you can’t use it inside. Not the same as remote engine start.

I think pre conditioning in Volvo PHEV when not plugged in is still on fuel. It’s optional. Not sure.
I have a friend in The Netherlands who had a Volvo estate (not sure which model 240 or something) which wasn't a PHEV and had remote start etc.

The little BMW i3s optionally have a little petrol motor - Range Extender - not sure if that too can offer some remote features - possibly region specific (e.g. Scandic countries).

I know I am Dutch. A Webasto is a small extra engine that runs on fuel to heat the engine and car. It might be comparable to the range extender in the i3. But in the i3 it generates electricity and in Webasto heat. It used to be quite common in cars in the Alps and Scandinavia. I think batteries won’t work for this scenario. And remote engine start like in the IS is not allowed in European countries.

Did you swap the wheels or just tyres?
tyres only as our winters not bad enough to warrant complete wheel swap IMHO if I had 21" would consider full winter wheel set as i understand 21" winter tyres very limited?

We had an i3 BEV from almost day 1, ordered December 2013 got it mid 2014, and that had pre heating, self parking and an app that could open the car, flash lights or beep the horn if 'someone' forgot where they'd parked it at the gigantic O2 carpark when rushing late for a concert. In fairness to BMW their connectivity then exceeds what the ID3 app has in 2022.

The i3 is a fantastic car, range was a bit short but as a City car hard to beat.

Yeah, I've got 21s and I haven't found a good solution other than the Porsche approved 20" wheel and winter tyre combo.
