    Hate for electrics saddens me.

Winter range is overblown. On long drives in the winter, my efficiency is perhaps 0.1 mile/kWh less than in summer. For short journeys around town I agree it is worse, but then those are so short that the only real impact is that it costs me a little more to charge in the winter. ICE cars are...

Is the new 19.2 kW on board charger worth it?

Mine came with it (was spec'd by the dealer), but honestly I've never used more than ~10kW which my home EVSE (I had one for my previous EV) can deliver. That charges the car overnight which is the fastest I've needed. To use the full 19kW, you'd need to have a 100A circuit (80A continuous)...

Electric Vehicles Are Way, Way More Energy-Efficient Than Internal Combustion Vehicles - MotorTrend Article

It matters if they plan to use simple addition/subtraction on the percentages to come up with an overall percentage for efficiency. While I agree that over a short period of time regen might be greater than energy used (I've see that, and the Taycan's trip summary fails in interesting ways when...

Electric Vehicles Are Way, Way More Energy-Efficient Than Internal Combustion Vehicles - MotorTrend Article

It is pretty hard to get an infographic that represents all the losses here (there are also losses, in both cases, to drag and rolling resistance). As others have commented, the percentages can lead to confusion unless you're clear about denominator - hopefully, all the percentages are relative...

OTA Software Update (July 17, 2023)!

I’lltake a look later, but the message said the update was for the high voltage CU so not sure it will show up in the PCM software versions display.

OTA Software Update (July 17, 2023)!

Installed this earlier in the week, no problems at all. Would have been nice to have some indication from outside the car that it was installing (or even a push message to the phone when it was done), but it did give a very precise time (7 minutes). I left it alone in the garage for longer than...

    Taycan Secret Tips and Functions

How do you manage that - they're always near the edge for me ☹️ Had one on the Taycan in the first few hundred miles of driving. Luckily covered by the tire/wheel protection so it only cost me $50 for a brand new tire.

Top to Bottom Review of the 2021 Taycan 4S (After 6 months ownership)

It uses the cameras; I have no ACC on mine, but use auto-regen all time. The only negative to the cameras being used is that bright light directly into it, or even some bumps, will cause it to disabled auto-regen mode.

Best Taycan entry point? Need your advice.

Honestly, unless you plan to take it to a track, the 4S has more than enough performance for every day use. I have never felt that I needed more power than the 4S has. In terms of year, as others have said, get 2021 for plug & charge support. Also, make sure you have the 150 kW / 400V charger...

Mirrors not folding when locked using phone

Same thing. Only ever fold when I lock from the key fob, the touch sensors on the doors or the button in the truck/boot lid. No idea why the remote lock is different.

Random Electrify America and Taycan Gossip (with EA repair man)

My 4S at the moment shows about 240 miles of range on 100%; when we get to the summer, that will probably climb to 250 miles. That includes lots of medium length freeway drives, a few longer road trips (long enough to need charging along the way) and some around town short trips, and I am on...

Random Electrify America and Taycan Gossip (with EA repair man)

Um, internal combustion engines are coming to an end of life from a regulations perspective, especially with respect to emissions, and an electric drivetrain clearly offers more power than ICE power in the same package. It will certainly be expected by buyers as soon as they see other brands get...

Random Electrify America and Taycan Gossip (with EA repair man)

On the EA topic, they are finally thinking about adding canopies (solar ones at that) over the chargers. Should have been there from day one. Doesn't take a genius to work out that keeping a charger cool is going to be a lot harder when it is standing out in the hot California sun all day. We've...

"Volkswagen’s troubled software division is getting new leadership. Again." -Article

While pure software company margins might be up there around 90% sometimes, remember that the largest market cap company in the world is paying some of the highest salaries, and is primarily a hardware & services company. They actually do not sell much software outside of their hardware (other...

"Volkswagen’s troubled software division is getting new leadership. Again." -Article

The problem is that not all the top execs in the legacy automotive space have worked out that software is that important. They have not, yet, realized that it is a game changer for their industry (the same has it has been for all others it has touched).

    Questions from a Tesla Owner

On the one hand I agree, but there is something odd at work in the Taycan because the efficiency number we get seems to be a little better when we have the chance to drive a little faster. Maybe there are other factors at work, but what feels like a steady 60-65 mph run will get 2.9 mi/kWh...

"Volkswagen’s troubled software division is getting new leadership. Again." -Article

The problem with the person at the top not have a strong background in software is that they don't necessarily have the knowledge to ask the right questions of the people below them, or to tell when an estimate for the amount of work, or a proposed solution seems wrong. Agreed. The other issue...

"Volkswagen’s troubled software division is getting new leadership. Again." -Article

Changing the management of the software unit is probably a good idea. Changing the head man for another non-software person, seems like a missed opportunity. No disrespect to Mr Bosch, but his background as a mechanical engineer doesn't really give him ideal qualifications for running a...

    Charging error with timer

Mine did it this week too, but I wrote it off as an app error. It also showed the incorrect charging speed while it was charging (app reported 2.2kW, the EVSE and car were up around 9kW). In the morning, the app showed a charging error at 99%, the EVSE was reporting the charge completed and the...

    Questions from a Tesla Owner

EVgo have some 100kW, 200kW and new 350kW ones too in some locations, but a lot of their earlier ones were 50kW units. Not many in Virginia yet (I see 6 when I filter for 100kW or more), but there are a lot in DC - map is showing 76 100kW or better units there. Chargepoint are also installing...
