22kw Onboard Charger - Used/New

Hi everyone,

Quick question — I’d like to get some feedback regarding the 22kW onboard charger. With the current shortage of new units, I’m considering going for a used or reconditioned one instead.

Has anyone here had experience with used/recon chargers? Would you recommend it, or are there specific things I should watch out for before making the switch?

Appreciate any insights or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I’ve got a recond Japan-spec car and recently ran into a yellow coloured electronic system error. Turns out the OBC (On-Board Charger) is faulty and needs to be replaced. I’m now looking for a used or recond 22kW OBC that’s compatible.

Would you recommend it, or are there specific things I should watch out for before making the switch?

I don’t know. I’ve never had to swap out an OBC in a Taycan. If yours is a single phase unit, then you’d best check with Porsche what’s needed. At the least it will require re-coding.

All parts are UID locked. It will have to be recoded by porsche. Most new cars do this (as another example - latest lambo you can't change anything connected electronically without re-coding it,).
They will not recode a used part not installed by them at an official porsche dealership; so your best bet is a service that has full PIWIS license and is willing to do it

You can get PIWIS 3 off the internet too if you know where to look.

It requires a bit more than that to recode a part; it requires you to have an authorized licensed account as far as I know. Aka to be rgeistered as an official porsche repair shop; and many won't risk recoding 2nd hand parts (as they could be stolen parts)

fwiw my high speed onboard charger failed almost 8 weeks ago, porsche just got the part in and I'll be getting the car back this week..

chun has the correct information.

The word you are looking for is component protection that has to be removed to enable the charger.

Simple enough to do with a fully enabled PIWIS system through the online Porsche portal, so before you purchase a used part you need to get the guy you are going to work with on-board.

The PIWIS specialist will require an approved OBD plug connected to your car, this will almost definitely have to come from the PIWIS specialist, so becomes completely complicated.

Do not confuse the almost free to use PIWIS clones for this procedure, they are not generally able to perform this work.

There is a guy called Capt.Kirk that I have previously seen on here that said this can be done on the cheap PIWIS clones using engineering / developer mode, so this may be possible with allot of research.

I should also add that the onboard charger is connected to the cooling system, there are two pipes that enter the bottom of the charger that release allot of cooling fluid when you disconnect them.

Once you replace the charging unit, you them have to pull a vacuum on the cooling system and use PIWIS to operate a pumping / flushing routine - this part can be completed using the clone PIWIS systems.

My OBC blew up a couple months ago - car was charging at home, tripped the circuit breaker for the house too.

The car was 3 weeks out of warranty (I bought it 1 week out of warranty, and had to wait 3 months to get the Porsche Approved warranty back on).

Price point 4000 EUR. They did have the part in stock though and literally changed in 1 day. Stil kinda sucks, my car only has 12000km on it and it's a little over 2 years old.

The US MSRP on that part is about $3.5k... plus labor, so yeah at least $5k usd to replace it. The job is quick, for me, the part took 8 weeks go get to the US.

I have it back and it seems to be working ok now.
