Retrofit 22KW charger

I am intrigued by this apparent alternate universe that is Europe with plentiful 22kW AC charging.

In theory, sure, urban areas, shopping malls, highway rest stops, etc. could have something like a dozen 22kW AC units -- or 19.2kW in the U.S. -- for every decent DCFC charger, going by both installation costs and utility hook-ups.

Three-phase power is plentiful in continental Europe both commercially and domestically. So 22 kW is a relative doddle as it’s just 32A per phase. Remember we have 230/240 volts per phase here or 415v across the phases.

We have it to a lesser extent in the UK. I have 3-phase supply at home and work, with 22 kW capable charge points and find it very useful indeed.

for the J1 dealer install pricing was north of $5k including the "kit" from Porsche - not sure it's worth $5k for North America where there is very very very little 19.2/22 kW infrastructure to leverage.

it's worth considering as a $1800 factory option (but still pretty limited use).

You got a quote for $5k? I just asked my local dealer and they said $10.5k!! ($2200 for the part, and $8100 for labor!)

I never followed through and that was only an estimate - I determined the money would be better spent towards a new EV vs. a faster OBC…

Weird, because Porsche has discontinued making the 22kW charger recently.

Exactly. They've stopped supply on it.

It's junk made by an Italian company and reverse engineering on here showed the primary silicon switches are 32A devices.

On a 32A charger.

Just completely underdesigned for the job. No wonder they fail. 40-50A devices would be the absolute bare minimum design spec when temperature derates are taken into account.

Absolute junk which unbelievably Porsche are incapable or unwilling to fix.

A bit like my failing 150kW DCDC converter which always yellow ringed above 60% SoC and Porsche downrated to 105kW rather than fix it.

Hopeless.

That's new. How do you know they downrated your 400V booster? Did they give you any paperwork on that?

So I put the car in with a few issues, failing 11kW AC charger and failed front cooling fans.

Also pointed out that the DCDC yellow ringed *always* at 60% SoC on Superchargers, so as the voltage rose. Always used to charge at 150kW then fail.

After I got it back, there was nothing in the paperwork so off I stomped to my local supercharger to gather evidence that the work needed to be done and show the problem.

I was surprised that 1) it made it to over 90% with no yellow ring (got bored after that) but that 2) it never once went over 105kW even with low SoC and hot battery.

Tried again since but it's clearly been derated as a "fix".

Actually, it has resurfaced on the Cayenne EV (restricted markets and not UK) where a 22kW can be optioned.

Dunno but I'm sure someone can source the part number. Cayenne EV seems to be off to a roaring start - just back from my local dealer and they have sold out their 6 month allocation (that's all that is available with first cars arriving in June) for this year. So March / April next year for a new order. Feels like the Taycan story!

I agree 100% - but so far I haven't been able to get an answer from Porsche as to if the unit is a new and improved model or just the same defective design we're all deeply familiar with…

I was surprised to see it as a build option on the Cayenne configurator (it's present in the North American configurator at the moment as a 19.2 kW factory option)…

if it's new and improved that would be GREAT!!!

and the fact that is:

• missing from the MY'2026 Macan EV
• missing from the MY'2026 Taycan
• but present for MY'2026 Cayenne

leads me to speculate that it might be a redesigned/improved unit - and that the existing EV's (Macan/Taycan) will "catch up" in future releases … as they adjust supply-chain/product.

I don't think Porsche is clueless enough to include it with it's known issues in the Cayenne if it was the same old unit with the known reliability problems…but we'll have to see.

it _IS_ listed as an option for the Cayenne EV…in North America
