i recently discovered Android Auto and prefer it over most navigation options, except with the Taycan the turn by turn only shows on the center screen and not on the HUD - at least I haven’t figured out how to make it do that, so I’m only assuming it isn’t supported.

My wife’s 2020 BMW X7 supports AA turn by turn on the HUD, so it’s not exactly a cutting edge feature.

Does anyone know if this is supposed to work or has VAG decided not to implement this feature (is at a hardware or software limitation?)

It's pure software and not impossible to fix, it's weird they still haven't done it. Perhaps they limit things on purpose because it would never be guidance as fully featured as the built-in navigation.

They might still fix it later. Volkswagen's new infotainment they use in the ID.3/ID.4 etc does actually support it, so there's some in-house expertise. It's just that most of the Audi and Porsche development resources (largely shared) are going to the system coming with the Macan EV / Q6 e-tron and what comes after that rather than the Taycan's MIB3 which is a bit of a dead end technology-wise.

Well, my wife’s X7 is in the shop for a service and the BMW dealer gave me an i4 as a loaner since they know I have the Taycan and the experince to deal with an EV. An I drive35 with almost no options, vinyl seats, keyless entry/start and not much else. A base model with a short options list.

Would’t you know it, AndroidAuto also works with the i4 by putting the directions from Android on the center area of the dashboard, where the map goes in the Taycan of you have the center tube configured for map. The AndroidAuto main display goes on the center screen and looks pretty good there compared to idrive 8.5.

as a side note, it’s interesting that this idrive35, which is the RWD version also seems to get about 270 miles based on my driving style, which is less than 10% better than my GTS. I would have thought the BMW to be more efficient in the real world conditions on my commute. It shows 3.3 kw/miles vs 2.7ish on the GTS, although during lighter commutes I have seen 3.1 and 3.4, depending on conditions. I’m thinking that near-300 miles is the sweet spot for most EVs now, and I’ll trade a small amount of efficiency for more fun when possible. However the electronics integration are a different story and the market has higher expectations, using a “purist” argument misses the point about what drivers expect or need now.

This is embarrassing. Even a base model BMW i4 can do this somewhat basic function, yet a $200k Porsche is unable to. Yes, the driving dynamics are better in the Porsche but in traffic it doesn’t matter how good the steering is or how well it goes around corners. BMW is showing up Porsche on the UX/Ui side.

come on Porsche, do better And add this long overdue feature.
