Car play behavior change

All of a sudden, car play reads out loud text messages when they arrive interrupting whatever I’m listening. The bell icon on the left changed to a bell icon with sound waves, which I assume means they are reading text messages. I used to tap on the text message when I wanted read otherwise it would stay silent. I don’t know why this change but anyone knows how to change it back???
