Beware when using a theoretically very fast charger if it's only giving you an actual slow charge rate ...

My car was at 10% battery towards the end of a long drive.
The battery was conditioned using the Porsche Charging Planner, so was ready for a very fast charge.
I needed a very small charge to get home.

I pulled up at a bank of new Gridserve 350 kW chargers.
However, the charger was only delivering 31 kW - it was the same for all of the 3 (of 6) new chargers that were in use. Maybe they were bedding-in because they were new.

The fee in the Porsche app was £10.25 for 8.93 kW (I only needed a small charge to get home).
So, an average of £1.15 per kW!

How can Porsche justify these charges?
Especially, when the retail [and very expensive price] Gridserve price would have been £0.79 per kW.

The main problem is the per minute "blocking charge" of £0.33 because they apply the per minute charge on the theoretical output of the charger and not the actual speed it delivered at.

Given the low Taycan sales, massive depreciation and generally lots of niggles, they should be going out of their way to make us really want to buy another car from them.
They should abolish the per minute blocking fee for all charging - which oddly they have done for the 350 kW Ionity chargers - or make it £0 for the first 30 mins.

(My moan is based on the charging structure and customer experience, not the overall negligible charging fee.)

Don't forget it's £/kW PLUS £/min time spent (17 mins)

Yep, I get that, and that's how I was charged.
My issue is the per minute blocking charge itself (that's how Porsche described it) which is really off putting and based on the theoretical charger's output not the actual output.

Yes its is a bit crap.
Ionity has never had a charge per minute and nor do most places so I only use my Porsche RFID card at Ionity and no longer go to a Porsche dealer charger unless really stuck :(
When my Porsche charge contract runs out I shan't bother to continue, it has saved me about £25 per year max since I had it.

The charging subscription is a joke. It does not give you any real benefits and the price is crazy everywhere except Ionity. But you can buy Ionity PowerPass and get the same or lower rates way cheaper.

Indeed but no evse delivers the max quoted and is entirely variable due to many factors not least the car itself.

The investment made has to be recovered somehow and the commercial relationship between Porsche and operators is sufficiently hazy to not know who gets or makes what each time you charge.

Day light robbery is being committed on the actual electricity provided as it is artificially high.

Ionity is the only bargain in town currently and I'm sure won't last forever.

If I had to public charge regularly I probably wouldn't be driving an EV at this time and continue to burn hydrocarbons as the refuelling costs must be similar mile per mile.

Interesting Adrian.

I chose the Taycan for the throttle response and wide power band plus it is a great drive with an excellent ride/handling compromise.
It was fitness for my purpose much more than running cost for me.

Same when I chose a PHEV Prius over a PHEV Panamera last time!

The only thing I dislike about my Taycan is its width, it is only just barely usable on the roads around here which is a great shame.

Running costs aren't the issue if I'm honest as I rarely public charge and if I did I would just get on with it - I'm still having my Eeyore moment over depreciation and the lack of a strategy to get us all on the EV journey. I can't even moan about lack of public infrastructure as we are reasonably spoilt where I typically venture.

The case for an EV is just lost on most just now but no doubt that will change over the next 10 years - but that's just it '10 years' before we may be forced if ever.

I've to get the 911 (hybrid?) out of my system at some point which I'm ever closer to convincing myself I need to do.

Between now and then I'll continue to enjoy my Taycan as it is easily the best car / Porsche I've owned - peerless in many ways.

The best thing about this post is that Stafford services, Northbound finally has its 350KW chargers working!!!! That plugs a gap between the M6 toll and jnct 18. Way to go.

I gave up my Porsche charging card as it didnt work at Ionity Carlisle (but does at Stafford - but that's always too busy), the chargers at South lakes never seem to be working and they wanted another £200 to renew.
Lots of choice now on the M6.

Motorway infrastructure seems pretty good now, however I quite like taking a scenic route when not in a big hurry and that is still limiting.
I just charge at a place where I can get a cup of tea or lunch and pay whatever they charge...
