OK, just got an update from support via email.

“Your 2020 Taycan Turbo S does not have the Plug and Charge feature, Remote lock and unlock feature, nor WIFI.”
It is possible to add PnC to 2020 Taycan, but to do that you'd have to pay to get the 19.2KW/80A charger installed, which is $5K-$7K (prices vary by region since most of it is in labor, the part itself is ~$1,200).

I'm baffled by how the 19.2kw/80A AC charger would impact P&C DC charging. I do have the onboard 150kW/400V DC charger.

The Taycan quirks make me feel inferior regularly.

It's less complex than in sounds at first:
  • 2020 onboard charger does not support PnC - it lacks the communications capabilities to authenticate the car with the external charger
  • Therefore, you need a newer (2021+) onboard charger to get PnC support
  • Porsche offers a retrofit to a 19.2KW/80A onboard charger (which was also a factory option since 2021 IIRC), which would automatically give you a newer onboard charger. The purpose of this upgrade is primarily to increase your AC (Level 2) maximum charging from 48A to 80A, the PnC gain is just a side effect.
  • You could try to get a standard 11KW/48A onboard charger swapped in instead, however its cost would be nearly the same as the larger capacity onboard charger (since most of the retrofit cost is labor), so it would make no sense to pay the same money to just get PnC if you could get almost doubling of Level 2 charging capabilities for the same money.
  • This has nothing to do with the 150KW/400V option - that is just a voltage doubler which enables Taycans, which have 800V batteries, to charge from 400V DC chargers. Up until Tesla opened up their supercharger network to competitors (via magic dock), there was practically zero 400V chargers in the US which Taycans could use. That was probably the only reason the 150KW upgrade was an option, it is standard on 2025 Taycans, and Macan EV has a different solution (even better than Taycan) to charge its 800V battery from 400V by virtually splitting the 800V battery into two 400V batteries for charging purposes.
I hope this helps clarify some things.

Subject says it all. Responses appreciated.

For context, I’ve had my GTS ST for a month. I’d conservatively say every third to fourth attempt at using the My Porsche app to request a free charge at an EA station works. My wife has a BMW iX and has experienced worse with her entitlement to free charging - which is similarly activated in-app via My BMW. The stations in question are all in Northern California.

She’s hypothesized that “if only I tapped my phone with a credit card, it’d work.” Of course, she’s just a little too frugal to have tested her hypothesis. I don’t have that boundary, and tapped my phone after four attempts at activating an EA charger earlier today. Surprise-surprise, it fired right up.

What’s the general experience amongst this group?
I'm in Southern Cal (Orange County) and I've never had any issues with the free 30 minute charging through the Porsche app. I just plug it in at any EA location and it immediately recognizes my account and begins charging. Only if the charger is down I go to another one that's working. I did have an issue once where the charger wouldn't start and it wouldn't unlock the port so I could remove the plug. I had to call EA customer service and they reset the charger remotely which allowed me to release the plug and start over. Once I plugged it back in it worked fine.

I don't have any issues with initiating charging via the MyPorsche app. My only occasional issue is with the EA charger reliability, but the MyPorsche app isn't to blame for that. ?
