My 2021 RWD, which is out of warranty, started experiencing this critical warning and automatic shutting down after sudden, aggressive acceleration. This typically occurs on highways at high speeds, and it is obviously dangerous at high speeds to lose power. I took it in for service last week at our local Porsche dealership. They installed several software upgrades, tested it, and told me the problem was fixed. As I turned out of the dealership, I puntched the accelerator to test it. Unfortunately, the Electrical Systems Error came back on. However, the power didn’t shut down this time. I immediately returned the car to the dealership. They kept the car for several more days and apparently ran more tests. This time I was told I would need to pay for the additional tests - $600. After testing, they told me that the issue was the “rear high-voltage power electronics,” which would need to be replaced at a cost of $12,842!

I’ve previously read here on the forum about similar experiences. Does anyone have any more current experience with this issue and any advice? Thanks.

Wouldn't that be covered under the 8 year battery/motor warranty?

This sucks. If the inverter is indeed faulty, then the quoted amount is in the ballpark of what it would be. For reference, I had both inverters replaced in my car 2 months ago, and while I didn’t see an official doc with an amount, the SA did mention the bill to Porsche would be ~20k USD. The rear motor inverter requires dropping the battery which makes the repair more costly than the front.

I think the 8 year is for battery only, not power electronics or the actual motor.

Inverters are not covered under warranty, just the battery is, and failures with them are unfortunately quite common.

You took a gamble not paying for the extended warranty, so I hope over the years you saved at least $13k on doing that and it paid off. If not, well... tough luck.

Have there been any reports of j1.2 inverters shitting the bed, or is it just too soon to tell?

Anyone know if the failure occurs gradually? I have an extended warranty and if it’s an issue I’d prefer to have it happen while still covered…

It is gradual in the sense that once it occurs once it will get worse and worse.
It happens at 100% full load initially, then it will start happening at lower and lower loads.

Happy to report some good news today from the dealership service department:

Although this component is not covered under any remaining warranty on the vehicle, we submitted a goodwill assistance request to Porsche on the client’s behalf. Porsche has offered to cover 80% of the repair cost”.

My out of pocket will be $2,600.

Porsche Customer Service doing the right thing!
