When driving I don't need telling this by some half arsed piece of code that flashes up a very bright and distracting warning that's especially off-putting when "making progress" at night. Possible to switch this off?

Probably not.

Either moisture or dirt on the camera / sensors can give this error but normally at startup and then clears. If you were 'pressing on' then perhaps something else triggered it - you could play around with the assistance systems setting them to something different than current to see if that helps.
