I've had much success programming older pin switch type remotes into my car but the ones without have vexed me - until now. I learned that the interactive instruction guide in the car isn't telling you everything. Basically, when you get to the"synchronizing" part, you have to push the learn button on your door opener.

I think we figured that but the issue is that depending on the brand of door opener that you have will determine whether it is supported by Homelink or not. Many openers have their own proprietary rolling security code which Homelink can't handle. The solution in many cases is to add the Universal Receiver to your opener and then set Homelink to learn via the UR method. In your case you got lucky and your opener is supported (mine wasn't hence the knowledge).
