In this quick pic I took while charging....

Porsche Taycan Need some Help Understanding Charging Rates 65BE0D10-8350-4224-8DDC-3F3852E59542

  • How can the current charge speed be 255 kW when the charger itself is rated at only 150kw?
  • Why is the current charge speed of 255 kW higher than the 129kW that the Taycan is requesting? I figured the actual charge speed would be the minimum of those two values.
  • Why isn't the Taycan requesting 350kW? I know the charger won't support it but shouldn't the Taycan at least ask for 350 with a 14% state of charge?
I figured the protocol was something along the lines of:

Taycan: Hey charger, send me 350kW!
Charger: Fool, read the sign. I can only send you 150kW.
Taycan: Oh. Then send me 150kw. If it makes you feel any better, I'll lower my request once we hit 80% state of charge.
Charger: Whatever. As if I need your permission. Anyway, here we go at 150kW.
Taycan: Fine. Hurry it up. I'm dying over here.
[green light turns on]

...but perhaps it's more complicated than that?

270kW would be the max and not 350. Still doesn't explain other than the charger couldn't provide more than it was offering.

I guess the charger has some software/hardware issues.
Did you look in the car for the charging speed the Taycan believes it is getting ?

And the variation in charging speed depends on many things like equipment in the car, capabilities of the charger, temperature, state of charge, ...
There are other very good explanations about this on the forum.

Interesting. Why would EA offer 350kw chargers if the Taycan only can take 270kw? Future proofing, maybe? Or does VW have other vehicles that can take 350kw?

I did but couldn't seem to find it. Is there a Taycan screen that shows the kW rate of charge while plugged in?

The main battery screen shows a "miles per minute" indicator, but that's virtually useless since the number of miles one can get out of a single kwh presumably depends on driving style, driving mode (I use Sport Plus), whether you're going up down a hill, outside temperature, etc.

On the center lower screen, if you go to the charging menu (tap the battery icon), then if you tap the miles/minute, it will toggle between miles/minute and kW.

I did not know that, thank you!

No one can take 350 nor can 350 be delivered - max is 270 - it's how it is.

Eventually cars with lots more batteries will be able to take more charge. The Taycan charging at 3C is pretty crazy, but if the car had twice as much battery, that'd be only 1.5C. So it's certainly feasible that future cars could take 350kW, given the 200kWH+ batteries talked about being in the trucks.

I'm just jealous you've got 100+kW at a public charging station. Damn.

We're so behind up here in Canada, they call a 60kW charger an "L3" unit, which is ridiculous. Plus, most of them are out-of-order.

Excuse me while I go feed my hamsters in my PorscheMobileRodent+ Charger...

Is there an accurate charge rate vs SOC chart for the various Taycan models. I was on a 150KW charger today (BP Pule in UK) and got 150KW from 35% SOC until the car reached 60% then it dropped to 100KW for the rest of the charge,

There are guidelines / indicative charging plans but as there are so many variables at play (the charger, the car, the ambient conditions etc) that it's hard to be precise. Normal reason for reduced throughput is the car protecting the battery - so it will normally start high and finish lower rather than sustain the same high throughput throughout. Not unique to Taycan's - common across EVs.
