Hi, my Taycan is only a few months old. This weekend I noticed a large vertical crack in my rear window. There's a small chip at the base of the glass. I did not damage this. I did
not put anything in my trunk that would cause this crack. Nothing hit my window. There's no damage around that little chip area. I sent it to my local dealership and the service guy told me he doesn't think it is going to be covered by warranty because there's that little chip at the end. He said if the chip wasn't there then it would more likely be covered by warranty. Have any of you experienced this? I'm so pissed. I refuse to pay for this. It is clearly a manufacturer defect. Any advice especially from those with past experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your help!

A chip is not a manufacturing defect. Something caused the chip. Might even have happened a while ago and wasn't noticeable until something (usually thermal stress) started the crack. Odd spot but that was impact damage. In 25 years in the repair business I don't think I have ever seen a successful warranty claim where there is a chip present.

Thanks for your reply. This really sucks. The only thing I can think of is that there must have been a chip before I got the car, but I never saw it. I also just took it into the dealership for a recall service. I guess I have no recourse. so sad...hopefully insurance will cover this.

Make sure to check your insurance. Most policies have glass coverage. Worst case this is a comprehensive claim with a higher deductible, but you should have some coverage to minimize the pain.

This could’ve been caused by mowing or weeding, as this has happened to me in the past. I was in a different car when I drove next to some landscape company cutting grass and weeds when a pebble caught a ride in the weed eater and landed on my rear window, instantly chipping it.

Went to a store one time, came back and the rear glass was shattered. Never did figure out how.

Be happy it’s not the front. That replacement is $3500+!

I recently had to replace my front windshield. I had a similar tiny white impact speck on the top edge of the glass that was there for about 8 months with no issue. Then on a very hot day a large crack originated from it. My insurance covered the $3800 cost minus my deductible. The glass guy said impacts on the edge can’t be repaired with the epoxy method and 90% of the time will end up in a fracture.

Get your frustration, but how can you know it’s a manufacturing fault and not been damaged externally? If damaged externally why would Porsche replace? Front screens get damaged all the time. I recently was cutting the grass and completely smashed the utility room door full length glass through some flying debris. Could have hit my car if the angle was slightly different.
