I’ve recently had a stone hit on the lower part of my windscreen.

There is no detectable surface damage but the hit must have affected an inside glass layer and caused some visible ‘discolouration’ (loss of vacuum?) – see pics

The damage is out of sight from the cabin and can only be seen from outside.

I have "Option VW6: Thermally and acoustically insulated laminated glass, top-tinted windscreen, privacy glass at the rear", on the vehicle.

  • Can this ‘damage’ be repaired without replacing the screen? – i.e. a smart repair?
  • My motor insurance species windscreen repairs by Autoglass – could they technically handle such a repair?
  • Would it be better to get my local Porsche dealership to carry out a repair?
  • I’m aware that a new screen is pretty expensive (£2000+?) given its specialist design and construction.
  • Im reluctant to let anyone loose on this until I've researched or taken advice.
I’d appreciate any advice, experience or feedback from anyone who’s been through this process.

Thanks in advance.

My suggestion is to take it to the nearest glass specialist as soon as possible, because I believe this can be cured just by applying some glue. I have had similar cases fixed with good results, I mean so that you can barely see the damaged spot afterwards.

And why asap, this kind of damage will very easily extend to a proper crack

Good advice, get it looked at asap.

However, i think if it's in the black border (or whatever it's called) then repairs become more problematic. I had another car's done last week and the auto glass website asks for chip locations etc to work out if its fix or replace and one of the zones is the black edging.

If the chip is less than a 5 pence piece in diameter, then it could be repairable, however as @BigBob says, as its in the black border area this may be a problem - it certainly would be visible after repair. Thinking about it, then need to get a piece of equiment on the inside of the glass to inject the glue, so I dont think they could repair it.

I had a (much bigger) stone chip in the exact same area. I had the exact same concerns about getting the right glass, as I have the same option as you.
I did eventually go through AutoGlass and insurers and everything was absolutly fine. The replacement was identical Saint Gobain class, with the same part codes (I checked before install).
All went well.
The only compaint I have is that on the new glass they didnt properly get the air out from around the rain sensor (top middle, behind rear-view mirror) and it doesnt look neat - I should have spotted before collecting it - so just double check that!

There is a camera at the top of your screen that should be re-calibrated if you replace your windscreen.

I have previously had issues using Autoglass they fitted a cheap heated windscreen to my Cayenne, half the elements stopped working over a 3 year period, so when I wanted to change my Taycan screen, I chose a Porsche screen and had one of the local glass companies fit it for me. This turned out to be much cheaper than any of the companies quoted to supply and fit any screen.

There were no issues with the camera calibration that I can tell, so did not bother getting it calibrated.

Your insurance may allow you to specify an OEM screen, or you can separately ask Autoglass for the top up cost to fit OEM.

I think autoglass offer a lifetime guarantee. May not be worth the steam of your piss of course!
