Took a hefty stone to the windscreen at the weekend ?

Porsche Taycan Windscreen rock chip IMG_0263

My insurer initially directed me to their approved installer AutoGlass. Their T&C state they’ll fit a ‘technically equivalent’ screen, but ‘recalibration may be required’.

Obviously there is absolutely no way I’m going with that option! Especially as I have Thermal & Noise glass and HUD etc.

I was expecting a massive hassle with the insurers. However, to my huge surprise, when I explained my concern, their reply was ‘Please accept my sincere apologies - I didn’t realise you had a Porsche. Please get a quote for the work from your dealer and email it to us and will approve the work with Porsche.’

I was remarkably surprised! I think the only problem is that an Autoglass replacement (apparently) doesn’t even get recorded as a claim - however you can be damn certain a £2.5k screen replacement by Porsche certainly will be!

I’m slightly concerned that I’ll be nailed by higher premiums for a while if I do claim!

I would suggest trying one of the commercial windshield (windscreen) repair kit - I had a similar type of rock impact - and used this https://a.co/d/5c81cfj Fixed the issue- though yours might be a bit big - but its worth a try for a little bit of money... I did have to replace the windshield later as I got a much larger crack due to another rock hit- but I didn't have to replace two windshields - and its not cheap ( either for an insurance claim that hits your insurance policy or out of pocket)

Wow. That's good. Which insurer?

(I had autoglass replace my rear windshield after some helpful *&nt smashed it - No issues with it, but no sensors either).

Admiral.

No chance of repairing it. The cracks are over 3 inches long and you also can’t get to the inside, as it’s below the dash, it’s also blown out the inside of the glass. So definitely not repairable.

Good to know, thanks. A lot of us with Admiral I think.

I would hope non-autoglass replacement doesn't impact your no-claims, though i suspect it will impact your underwriting/underlying premium calculation. And now as you've told them, they'll probably make that adjustment anyway whether you claim or pay yourself.

Are they charging you your accident excess amount or glass excess (assuming they're not the same)? That might give an insight into it.

Ouch.

Had a smaller knock on our new Volvo screen. *Just* repairable in that instance.

Things like this will be why the UK Insurance Madness thread exist.

He said it would only be my glass excess interestingly. I have £1,000 normal excess, so would probably just not claim if that was the case.

I had exactly the same sort of chip in the same spot. Our insurer (Aviva) took a moment to be told that it was a Porsche with the thermal glass and there was no hassle. National Windscreens was used to do the work and they ordered the glass in from Porsche. They do windscreens all day every day,

The bonus to going with the dealer and having them replace your windshield under an insurance claim is you get a free alignment out of the deal which is a few thousand dollars by itself. They have to realign the wheels and sensors when the windshield is replaced.
