Um, I may be going out on a limb here, but noting your history I'd say you got bored, and want to take on a new challenge - with a new color scheme, maybe you have a new wheel style in mind etc. Which is totally fine, and may be a reason in itself - no need to use the VLC as a justification. :)

(Is there a new wheel style in the works?)

Currenly in a position to move from a 22 Taycan CT to a 23 CT. Spec the car how I want. Main thing driving the idea of the swap is to get the variable light roof.

Lets take value loss from the sale of the current vehicle out of the equation for the moment.
If you take the cost out of the equation, meaning assume it's $0 or practically irrelevant to you (perhaps you play high stakes poker and put more than the upgrade cost on a single bet multiple times a night every weekend), then sure, upgrade to a year newer car and get a fun VLC option to to play with.

In all seriousness though, the question of " Would you make the swap from your current Taycan to a 23 MY in order to get the variable light roof?" is very much relative to cost and how much you value the upgrade. For someone who picked up a MY22 recently, then spent money on PPF, tint, and perhaps a radar/laser countermeasures, might not be willing to upgrade to a MY23 even for $0 (since the upgrades I just mentioned can add up to $20K+). I'll hopefully be picking up my MY23 in a couple of months. After I'm finished customizing it, if you offered me a MY24 in the summer or Christmas this year, same spec or a even a chance to change the spec for just the price difference in specs, I'd give you a hard pass. My guess, it would take giving me $50K to upgrade, then it might make it worth my while to upgrade from MY23 to MY24 (assuming they don't change the lights to the ones I don't like). Anything less than that, no thank you (barring of course getting a lemon which I just want to get rid off).

As for VLC specifically, I have never seen in person, but passed on it given what I have seen in pictures and videos and the price. I think my max price to include it, and only because I could just not use it and keep the roof transparent if I tire or it, would be ~$500. But again, that's me, you might be in a whole different level of spending, or you really value VLC.

Bottom line, is the upgrade cost worth getting VLC, FOR YOU?

Gotta go with the flow: firmly saying NO!

As the driver, I hardly even notice the roof, it's something only passengers COULD notice....even the cost of new registration isn't worth that upgrade.

Now, technology that has a camera that can identify and spot highway patrol and cops....now that's something worth busting the move!

What’s the cost to do this considering depreciation, tax, etc.?
THAT is the question. Interest rates, sale/trade in value of the existing, tax credits. Its a series of transactions that all need to work out well to make it worthwhile.

Boredom should be the devils playground....

With wheels there is always something new cooking in the kitchen. Probably see it towards the end of the first quarter 2023

The more time is spend with the equation of swapping it isn't necessarily the wisest decision. Lots of factors with the sale of the existing car, interest rates, taxes etc all play a roll. But taking money out of the equation.....

As I look at the options list the VLC and a couple other boxes checked aren't really substantial enough to justify all the work needed to make the swap. Plus the chances for materials holds to occur between the time of order, and time of delivery. My Taycan now is spec'd out how I wanted and is a blast to drive.

With all that said, I would DEFINITELY go with the VLC and a couple other options if I did not have my current car and the opportunity to spec a new one.

Appreciate all the input!

No. You will not use it after week 1. But if you really need the special glass, you can apply window film in the pattern of your choice. This will definitely impress your buddies at the golf club. Use my picture as a guide to the possibilities.

To swap a car over a roof or not. Truly a first world problem here :CWL:
In all seriousness though, you mentioned you’ll have it specced like you want it, and if those are some important options you want to add - I would do it. I bought a CPO and it’s missing quite a few things I’d love to have - white seatbelts, HUD, Heat Pump, InnoDrive, still I enjoy it as is and would not swap it for another one unless there was a really good deal but it’s highly unlikely.

We opted out of the pano roof because we like the way the sheet metal looks without it, giving the car a bit more of a sleek feel. So for me, not worth it.
