Porsche’s valuation of Taycan

I heard your pov, everybody knows the car is terrible as an EV.

Apparently not everybody, as I didn't know (still don't). I've driven Teslas for a decade, and switched to Taycan + Q8 eTron. While yes, Tesla has its advantages and is a more advanced EV product, I wouldn't call the Taycan a terrible EV. Not the bleeding edge latest tech does not meant terrible. Taycan as an EV is on par with pre-2020 Tesla, probably a little better. Why do you think Taycan is terrible as an EV?

I am looking at a 911 GT3 and Porsche gives me barely 45% of the cost of the car after about 2 years and 20k miles.

Honest question, how much were you expecting for your Taycan?

when I purchased my Taycan, I was well aware that the resale value would not be great. I did not buy it for resale. I expected this cars resale value to mimic the Panamera's.

I’m sorry, I just don’t get the defeatist attitude. I have a 4S ST which I bought new in Feb. I have had no issues and believe it to be the best car I have ever owned. I bought the car with my pension pot and have no regrets, I didn’t buy the car as an investment so depreciation is just a number and only becomes relevant if I sell it . Stick a private plate on the car and enjoy it for years. A 911 will cost you far more in the long run!!

There isn't any meaning of valuation for the human beings on the day they had died. I enjoy the Taycon driving experience than any of my previous cars I had ever own. I don't think the battery techology would go any much further in the next 6-10 years from this point (maybe some better software improvement). I will change another Porsche after those time frame arrive. Good health to enjoy!

The other thing some people, for reasons I can’t understand, can’t seem to grasp, is that the price that they are offered by a dealer is a wholesale price, not a retail price. So the difference between the original price and that offer is not equal to depreciation. It also includes the discount that you’re giving the dealer to compensate them for incurring the cost and risk of reselling the car. And with interest rates going from 2 to 7 percent and the supply chain freeing up, that dealer spread has grown significantly from what it was just 12 months ago. My dealer confirmed as much to me.

Totally agree - other than buying with a pension pot. Why use an appreciating asset to buy a depreciating one? Having said that as I'm typing I'm realise you may well be in draw-down/tax free withdrawal phase in which case enjoy your retirement and saving during working life is important precisely so you can enjoy nice things at retirement!

In addition to the dealer price being the wholesale price, they look at current auction value (which they do not set; the market sets). They have all the info, know how much the car will sell for, and will not take a car (any car) that they cannot clean up, safety check, and sell for some profit. They do not value Porsche differently than any other brand.

Only two comments. First, and I’m guessing you’re new to Porsche, but, pre-COVID, Porsche’s didn’t hold their value any better than any other high end marque, nor did anything but the rarest of Porsche’s not depreciate. The idea that Porsches are immune to the heavy depreciation curve typical of expensive cars is laughable to anyone who’s been a Porsche customer for years.

Second, if your car is a 2021, it’s three years old (or close to it), not two. The standard luxury sedan depreciation curve is 50% loss in the first three years. So again, your experience is typical, though it sounds like you expected the Taycan would somehow be immune to this.

I actually did a 30 day diary with pictures of all the defects to document my experience to Porsche - I didnt invent this.

I personally don't doubt your experience but I am sceptical of the value of extrapolating it to all Taycans.

This forum has many (many) threads (and posts) for Taycan complaints.
And praise.
Where the balance is, especially account for self-selection bias, I have no idea.
But characterizing this forum as comprising only Taycan praise with any complaints somehow being suppressed or otherwise discouraged ... ?

It is a Porsche dealer. It is Porsche valuing my car. Fact. Not desires or dreams.

Also a fact that your local Porsche dealership is not owned (whether entirely or even in part) by Porsche Cars North America or Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG.
Another fact is that you can obtain your own wholesale valuations by shopping around your Taycan to other nearby dealers. And can try to sell it privately on BaT, or here, etc. (Just don't expect to receive the retail price at which your independently owned Porsche dealer would ultimately sell your Taycan, for which it's probably offered tens of thousands of dollars less.)
