Public EV fast charging falls into two camps: Tesla and everyone else. The first generally works, the second too often doesn’t. One is plug and play, the others often aren’t.

Electrify America is a big part of the everyone else. Especially when it comes to public Level 3 charging, aka, fast charging. Yes, charging at Electrify America can be flawless sometimes. Some days it just works. On those days public charging can actually be gratifying. But too often it’s frustrating. What follows is not gratuitous criticism. Just a depiction of my experience at EA. I’ve included a response from Electrify America and commentary from an analyst below also.

Jesus. here we go again.

This forum is a f*cking broken record on Electrify America. Is some of it deserved? Absolutely. But there are a few members on this forum that have actually road tripped a significant number of miles in an EV and successfully leveraged the Electrify America network while the vast majority bitch about EA with little or no first hand experience.

I think it is pathetic that people are pining for Tesla supercharger access, or singing the praises of Tesla. I for one will not give a single penny to Tesla so long as it is associated with Elon Musk.

At this point Tesla and Elon Musk are the same thing, and I for one refuse to compromise my values to spend a single penny on anything Tesla.

Maybe having this thread locked is a good thing since there is absolutely nothing new to see in that Forbes article.

since I have had to pay for charging and the majority of my road tripping is within Florida, which is fairly well covered by many charging networks, I have been able to avoid the EA nightmares. Here in FL. EA is charging .56 per kwh which I find to be excessive. FPL is at .30 per kwh and their chargers usually work. on a recent trip I used a charger at a 7/11, unknown network, that was labeled as putting out 90kw and I was getting 127 kw out of it, not bad. even at the slower speeds that I anticipated getting it was a better choice than trying a low rated on plugshare EA charging 12 miles north.

forums like this are for sharing info and someone trying to stifle conversation and injecting nonsense politics is not what is needed here.

*The following is merely my opinion

The gas station network took many years to develop into what exists today. I agree EV charging stations still have a long way to go but I feel like some perspective is still in order.

As much trouble as it can sometimes be to plan around open, working chargers, there still seem to be a lot more people on the road looking for help after running out of gas than running out of power.

I’ll be taking a short road trip this weekend between Austin and Dallas. I am confident that EA will work just fine for me, but there are multiple other options for me to choose from in case it doesn’t. There has been some good expansion of the charging network in TX over the past couple of years. I’m looking forward to many more stations coming online in the next few years.

Is your objective is to continue to flood the board with posts of things we all know about, or are you actually going to hit the road and put the current charging infrastructure to use, like others on this board do? I would much rather read about you putting your car to use and driving beyond the borders of Ohio.

We all know EA is not perfect, but what other options are there if you want to drive from Ohio to Chicago, or St. Louis, or Nashville?

I live in the mid-Atlantic area and use EA almost exclusively, since I cannot do home charging. My impression is that EA maintenance has improved, as I have noticed some upgrades to equipment and my charging experience has generally improved. Still, when you are down at 20% and you have a problem charging, it gets way too exciting deciding where to try next.

The problem is not limited to EA. I think there may be some kind of protocol problem going on with some of the older EvGo chargers I have (tried) to use.

Although the story of charging issues is all too familiar, I am still interested, hoping to hear of gradual improvements from various networks in my area. So keep the comments coming as far as I’m concerned.

I feel the need to correct the ill informed remarks regarding charging.

I cannot speak for the entire US but there are many fast charging networks available that are not EA.

you really should explore the options on a site like www.plugshare.com

I plotted a trip from columbus OH, about the center of the state to nashville.
there are a tesla NACS units, chargepoint 400kw units, evgo and others DC fast chargers that will get you all the "juice" needed to make the trip.

a similar trip to chicago has tesla NACS units, evconnect units even government of indiana units, the trip would be easy to make with plenty of places to fast charge.

I didn't bother to plot a trip to St. Louis but I would expect to see similar options.

maybe out in CO and other low populated areas like montana, WY and the dakotas are your charging opportunities limited but that is far from the case east of the mississippi or west of the rockies.

But, you are soooooooooooooooo right because EVERYONE knows that you want to limit your charging speeds to 150kW in a Taycan when leveraging out of the way non Electrify America chargers while on a road trip.

Jesus, you are about as savvy as your Lucid is unappealing.

So this happened today… I stopped at an EA, I plugged in the car, the car automatically started charging, and it was up to 85% in 15 minutes. Then I finished driving to Dallas. True story. I attached a couple of photos to see my charging rates.

In fairness to the EA haters, the Ford Lightning next to me was having an issue with charging speed and one of the 6 charging stations looked like it was hung.

Maybe I’m just lucky? ?‍♂
