Hey guys, I’m in the process of buying a used 2024 Taycan GTS from the States through a third party used car dealership.

They are charging me a $1,995 registration fee and it seems excessive.
Does anyone know if this is normal?

It is excessive but whether legal or not…who knows. In Maine you get to pay a fee about that large every year when one registers their Taycan!

Ooh got it, appreciate it! Was worried I might be getting ripped off.
Dealers will rip you off on other fees but registration is one that is hard to do.
Watch for Doc fees cause that's an easy one.

You can post your fees to double check.

Yes, they sent me a breakdown of the registration fee and it seems correct.
They did charge a $349 documentation fee and $599 dealer prep fee which I tried to remove but they didn't budge, they were trying to give me a refund of my deposit so I just gave in. I'm so bad at negotiating haha

Those are fake fees, but if they won't drop it, them

Understand there are state registration and title fees and then there are dealer's "handling" fees. Every dealer has a different paperwork/handling fee. I would get them to clarify and have them break down the fees to 1. Government pass through fees vs 2. Their handling fees

My opinion is handling fees are junk fees tacked on to increase the price of the purchase. They claim it's the cost of "back office operations" for processing your paperwork, but in theory all overhead costs should be baked into the price of the car

Handling fees are negotiable. When I negotiate for a sale of a vehicle I actually joke with them to say " I don't care whether you sell me a car for $1 with $99,999 handling fee or $99,999 with $1 handling fee, but my offer is $100,000 pre tax and state fees"

Sounds like you're buying and taking it out of state. In that case most states only have a temp plate fee of something de minis of $30 or something, all other stuff is likely "handling" fees.

A round number of "$1995" sounds like they are tacking on $2k to put in their pockets. If you are exporting the car you do not have to register it. Scam, IMO. Plus their other fees are also high. $600 prep? For what? A car wash?

I've bought many cars outside my home state. It varies, but some states/dealers do charge my state's registration fees as part of the sale. Definitely confusing the first time it happens. My experience has been that they forward that cash (sometimes via a third party service) to my local DMV. The DMV then figures out the actual registration cost. Often the dealer charged me too much. In that case the DMV cuts me a refund check. Some states/dealers will not create a temp plate for an out of state buyer. I've driven two vehicles the 1000 miles home with absolutely no plate. Answers the question "do you need a plate?"! (btw one of those trips we got pulled over by cops but they were cool about it once we proved we did indeed own the Porsche we were driving).

This is not going to the dealer. This is going to the state, county, city.

Welcome to Seattle @turtletaycan. Expect to similar every year directly to the licensing office. It's the "lack of math comprehension tax" the voters approved when they read "less than 1% increase of annual plate registration". Yep, it was less than one percent, something like from 0.3% to 1.29% of the car value, which is not actual market value, but following the government depreciation table which is nowhere near reality - for example 1 year old car is worth 98% of MSRP to the state, but only for tax purposes (you can't just give them the car in lieu of taxes and erase that much off your tax bill).

Yeah that sucks lol the dealership (out of state) told me they did a double take on that because the amount was so high.
