Is this a good idea to force the Taycan to charge the 12V battery?

I will leave the car for 7-8 weeks with about 60% HV battery. I am nervous that while I am away my 12V will be drained empty.

Would starting pre-climate for 5 minutes from the My Porsche App while being away trigger the cars HV battery to charge the 12V battery? Or do I have any other options? My car is parked in a underground parking so not always good Internet connection and I do not have HV charger on my spot unfortunately since it’s a rented parking spot.

Good question. I will test this, see if it charges the battery. You can tell by re-starting the vehicle shortly after then check how long the 12V bus voltage stays at 14V.

Good question. I will test this, see if it charges the battery. You can tell by re-starting the vehicle shortly after then check how long the 12V bus voltage stays at 14V.

I performed the experiment once so far. Result appears to confirm the theory that initiating a remote pre-climate command does indeed have the side effect that the 12V battery is charged.

My vehicle had been sitting for a couple of weeks. I initiated a remote pre-climate command this morning. Left it for 30min then canceled the command. Then I approached the vehicle, unlocked, turned on and watched the 12V bus voltage reading. It never rose above 13.4V, indicating no charging of the 12V battery.

This is incorrect, please look at your manual. Manual says that you can’t use trickle charger to charge your HV battery. Also this has been discussed multiple times about the 12V battery charging. Doesn’t really answer your question if you can force 12V battery charging but certainly trickle charging which is fine

It depends on the type of 12 Volt Lithium charger. One of the more in depth discussions with Porsche technical team explains a bit of this:
”I’d like to start by clarifying the current logic of 12V battery support by the HV system in Taycan’s. As we understand it, the 12V battery is supported between 15%-20% SoC (State of Charge) only up to the point the HV Soc is at 10%, or a maximum of 8 x 30-minute charges have been performed (on the LV system) or the LV reaches 20Ah. This is only repeated if the ignition is cycled i.e. the car is parked for an extended period, it is maintained to 20Ah, but after a few days the SoC drops below 20% (LV). The Driver’s manual states: The use of boosters or non-approved chargers can result in the battery being charged with excessive charging voltage and excessive charging current. This can damage the battery and irritating gases can escape. This can cause considerable damage to the vehicle and burns.

• Do not use boosters.
• Only use chargers that have been approved by the equipment manufacturer for LiFeP04 batteries with integrated electronic protection circuits.
• The following maximum values must never be exceeded: Max. charging voltage:14.8V (even in the event of a fault with battery disconnected; no voltage peaks permitted). Max. charging current: 90A
• CTEC chargers are listed for all our models except Taycan.

It's NOT incorrect, and has nothing to do with the manual. It's covered in this separate document Porsche published covering long term storage: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2022/MC-10209809-0001.pdf It says "don't use the Porsche battery maintainer" and "charge with a charger that supplies 80A @14V" (which no trickle charger does).

Porsche specifically advises AGAINST doing this in it's guidelines and says this WILL drain the 12V battery.

8 weeks should not cause any issues, I left my car 7 weeks last summer, not plugged into anything, zero problems.

how do I verify this? Like if I could how long it stay 14v what it means?

So it means by turningen pre climate remotely from phone. Nothing charged your battery on the car?

Do you know if the car will charge and maintain the 12V battery if I ask my neighbor to turn on and off the car right away? Let’s say after it’s been unused for 3 weeks, start it and turn off, then let it stay for 3 weeks more?

An awful lot of owners are having this problem so probably my local Porsche dealer who acknowledges that there is a problem might be correct ! Lets hope the 12 Volt switch software update that they say should sort it will.
