To 'extended warranty' or not to 'extended warranty' - that is the question!

“Warranty administrator”? So is this a 3rd party warranty?
I assume the reference to the Porsche warranty is the “Battery Warranty”, but it’s not clear.

After charging at tesla supercharger, someting happened in the handshake and those parts "failed." Factory warranty over and only battery warranty remained. They said it was not the battery but battery componets so not covered. I escalated multiple times to PCNA for goodwill without success.

Happy ending - i got insurance to cover since it was from an event and not normal driving. Moral of story, never own a taycan without extended warranty. I just purchased xcare for 50k miles/4 years which includes HV battery so i'm covered for 4 more years now, extending battery warranty to from 8 years to 10. 2020 4s with 47k miles.

Shop was porsche service center - great team. It's still in shop now and will end up taking about a month total. They have to drop the entire battery to repair.

PS: Don't risk charging at tesla - too many horror stories. Go native.

Interesting that one of the components "battery isolator" was not covered by Porsche battery warranty. Battery isolator is the e-box, which is mounted on/attached to the HV battery. My understanding is that a replacement HV battery is delivered with the e-box installed.

I wonder if whether the battery warranty applies depends on the potential cause of the damage.

For example, if the e-box failed on its own, and the HV battery was damaged as a result, what does the Porsche battery warranty actually cover, assuming the vehicle was out of the 4-year basic warranty?

The xcare extended warranty, which includes HV battery, seems too good to be true.

It will be interesting to find out in the future how well HV battery coverage from xcare and others works after the 8 year Porsche battery warranty has expired.

Porsche vehicle service plans in US so far exclude batteries.

I hear you. It was a risk I weighed and decided to take. They have a mostly sterling reputation in the Tesla community and answer the phone when you call.

To me it was either sell the car once repaired or buy this insurance policy. I look as it as less than sales tax if I purchase something else, so this extends my ownership on a now slower depreciating car that I still love. Time will tell.

Remember that with the "extended warranty" a lot of wearable parts are not covered (including the 12V battery).
Porsche wants to change your brake pads every 6 years for instance.
When you have warranty you HAVE TO change them ($1500-$2000).
Without warranty you're fine.
There's something to win here.
When you have PCCB it's $4000 including labor.
You do the math.

Of course. With Xcare not required but you always have to budget consumables like any car.

I get that, but all I’m saying is that the warranty company factored that in already. It’s why the Taycan extended warranty is 4X the cost of the Mach E.

It’s possible they under priced the warranties 6 years ago, but nothing you said is a surprise by 2026.

Very strange that battery components wouldn’t be covered. I haven’t read through the entire Taycan warranty yet, but on my last car (Mach E) the entire HV battery and e-drive components were covered for the full 8 years.

I wonder if your case is more of a question as to “why” things failed. Since they blame a 3rd party component, it’s an insurance claim not a warranty claim anyways.

Also from my last car fine print, if a “non-Ford” part or charger etc cause the car to fail, they can deny the claim. I don’t imagine Porsche is any different with how picky they are even down to our tires.

the funny thing is, the handful of people that use their warranty always say to get it. but the countless people that "got it for peace of mind" but never use it (aka the folks making the insurance company money) never say they regret it. so you never get the full perspective of the risk vs reward.
