Thanks to all who responded.
My apologies to Noura in Brussels for not putting things in metric as well. I will try to also include the metric equivalents in this post.
Here's my BOTTOM LINE response to the above posts:
If the Taycan 4S can get a 230-mile range off a 80% down to a 5-10% charge...
Miwa,
Thanks for your response. I appreciate your position.
That being said, I am a SoCal boy and have always "driven" my cars long distances, to include my 911's, Boxster, 944, 240Z, and even my 1958 Austin Healy Bug-Eye Sprite. I have driven the full length of all east-west Interstates...
All, Sorry this is going to be a bit long, but I have been researching this issue for the last 5 months.
Almost sounds like the contents of my article in my local PCA-Southern Arizona Region (SAR) newsletter this past April. The Title "Porsche Taycan 4S, Can I Get There From Here". The...
Ron_b, I have left both chats and "suggestions" with Electrify American relative to putting a station in Needles CA. Haven't gotten a response yet. Did the same with EVgo, with the same result. I will give it another week or so and recontact them about them to see if there is any interest. I...
Ron_b, Watched the Podcast and added my usual comment about Tucson/Phoenix to Las Vegas in a 4S during the summer heat, and the lack of 50kW charging stations between Blythe CA and Las Vegas along US-95. I hope it gets read by the Inside EVs folks
Ron_b.
Thanks. I did note in the Range Estimator for the 4S for Dubai that it mentions that the Taycan was "tested" in temps as high as 50C that's 122F. Outside of that mention I have not been able to see anything "official" from Porsche associated with range affected by such extreme hight...
Video is fun...having driven that route from Palm Springs to Mar Vista am familiar with it. Important notes: Started out with a full charge. On long distance trips there would be interim charges to 80% at 50kW charging locations lasting 1 1/2 hours. The temps may be a little warmer in the...
Ron_b.
Hopefully whoever tries it has a Plan B for rescuing themselves if the Taycan State of Charge (SOC) drops down too low between Searchlight & Henderson. I recently reviewed the feedback of a UK Taycan owner about Porsche's on-board range management software. It sounds like if it is used...
Reg,
You are right not likely to see someone in a 4S do it. HOWEVER, I would like to see ANY Taycan make the trip from Tucson/Phoenix to Las Vegas this summer to prove that it Can Get There From Here even in the extreme's of summer, on an 80% recharge, and the lack of a 50kW charging station...
California Rates Taycan 4S. For those interested in range "estimates" the California Air Resources Board (CARB) rated the Taycan 4S at having a range of 289.7 miles. HOWEVER, like the EPA, CARB uses a Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) for its range estimates. Which means it really...
Reg.
PS. I actually included the 50kW charging station map from PlugShare for the desert Southwest area in my expose showing that there is this great hole in both existing and coming soon charging stations along major roadways in the area bounded by I-17 on the east, I-40 on the North, I-15 on...
Reg,
According to Electrify America (EA), the only coming soon charging station is at a Love's Travel Center in Quartzite AZ. Quartzite AZ is on the AZ CA border along I-10, and it is even farther away from Henderson/Las Vegas NV than the EVgo charging station in Blythe...about 230 miles. So...
Reg, The "expose" was based on the lack of a charging station between the 200+ mile distance between Blythe CA and Henderson/Las Vegas and an estimated 200 mile range of a Taycan 4S with the 93.4kW battery. This was estimated using the Porsche.com/middle east/Dubai Range Estimator, set for the...
Ron_B, Hopefully you are still on schedule for delivery in September. I am now published...my Southern Arizona Porsche Club published my "expose" on not being able to get there (Las Vegas) from here (Tucson) in a Taycan 4S. Used nothing but Porsche "official" sources on range and Google...
Ron_b, Just to let you know I sent messages to both Electrify America and EVgo suggesting they put a 50kW or better charging station along i-40 in Needles CA. I will be interested to see what they have to say. Mentioned the situation of not being able to get there (Las Vegas) from here...
Ron_b, Here's hoping you get your 4S in September:) I have been following the Porsche EV since the Mission E. I even went to Tech Tactics West in November where I got to see, touch, and explore but not drive a Taycan that was there. The local Tucson dealership is undergoing renovation but did...
Ron_B, You are right about my not knowing exactly about affect of temperature on the battery. The April 2020 Auto Edition of Consumer Reports has an article on EVs in which it does comment that high temperature has affect on the range...whether that's because the A/C is running a lot or some...
I did review the Nurburging tests which were primarily endurance tests and not on a production vehicle. I never did see how many km were achieved between charges, or what the charge levels were each time the Taycan was charged. Here's the closest thing to "facts" from Porsche about the range...
It isn't really a "corner case"... A lot of folks drive from Tucson/Phoenix to Las Vegas (when there isn't a COVID19 problem) during the summer months here when it is normal outside temperatures often exceed 105F. The real problem is the lack of a 50kW charging station between Blythe and Las...
Still haven't seen any facts/figures/test results associated with what happens both range wise, and inside cabin temperature wise when the outside temp is 110F, the Range mode/ECO PLUS is selected, and one starts out with only an 80% charge. I would hate to find myself in my Taycan somewhere...
