The SUV explosion was created by strict fuel economy rules. The sedan rules got crazy tight so manufacturers responded by pushing vehicles that fit into the more permissive "light truck" rules. Classic Cobra Effect situation.
Update - notes say the problem was with the AC charger but somehow it resulted in DC also not working. They also fixed my left rear parking brake problem, which damaged the ceramic rotor as well. Total tab to Porsche - $8k. Everything works now.
If you scroll up a bit, you'll see that both of mine broke but most cases seem to be just the AC side. In my case, it looks like a problem with the controller that brokers the connections between the AC or DC charger and the battery management system. They're not totally sure yet though.

I can't speak for the UK but this hasn't been the case in the US. The last big update ended up taking two weeks at the dealer for me. The only things that have been coming OTA were map updates. That's why they sent the email out - they're finally pushing updates to critical functionality OTA.
