I recently got my car back from the dealership after weeks of waiting and numerous back-and-forth conversations with Porsche in Germany. After numerous tests, it was discovered that the motor with only 19,000 miles on it, was failing.

I might sell it before the warranty expires.

I’m curious to know if others have encountered the same issue.

The motor was making a loud grinding noise.

Replacing a motor is more expensive than replacing a HV battery. My understanding is that the motor is more reliable than the battery. If you have a 4WD you double the risk!
I think the motor is considered part of the drive train and covered by the Approved Warranty. Given the low failure rate & typical longevity you’d think it would be hard for Porsche to sustain a normal wear failure argument. But a collapse of trust caused me to exit the brand.

I purchased my 2022 CT4 with 22k miles in 2024. Several months after driving it, I noticed a discrete tone of approx 315hz /89dB that increased freq with motor RPM. Rear Motor. I had it checked by the dealer, who ran sound tests on it and submitted the readings to Porsche. Porsche authorized the rear e-machine replacement under warranty. All is well 20K miles later.

Late last year I scanned my 2020 4S with 41K miles with an OBD scanner. It showed numerous errors. I had been hearing a thunk when engaging Drive and was told by the dealer this was normal. I brought my car to the dealer and they determined that the rear motor need replacement. I have an extended warranty purchased from the Porsche dealer. After getting approval from the warranty company my dealer replaced the rear motor. It is a big job. The whole rear drive train has to be dropped in order to access the rear motor power connections. The warranty company is granted large discounts on parts and labor. The bill was $24K with a $250 deductible. The episode is exactly why I bought the extended warranty. My car is covered until 2030 or 75K miles.

To be clear, the dealer’s service department replaced the motor under the warranty, right? Was there some push back from Porsche?

Yes, replaced under warranty.

Porsche would not authorize the repair until the dealership conducted several tests, and most of the equipment the dealership didn’t have, so we had to wait. I ended up calling Porsche of North America, and they never followed up with me. But the dealership contacted me the next day and gave me an ETA, so I guess it helped.

How did you determine the frequency and dB of the noise? I hear a hum from the rear left side of my 2024 turbo s, while it is getting power, and the dealer cannot replicate it. It is not the wheels or tires as it does not come whe the car is coasting at the same speed. I am concerned it is the motor or some element of the drive train. The noise only comes above about 65-70 mph. Any thoughts or guidance would be much appreciated.

I used an IPhone Spectrum Analyzer App that uses the iphone's mic. The app was Sonic Tools, which is no longer available. There a number of them on the app store which show a dB (y-axis) vs a log Frequency (y-axis). My motor tone was the loudest tone on the display. Maybe someone on the forum knows more about an easier Spectrum Analyzer.

Yes, I had a strong whining sound from the front motor of my first Taycan but it didn't affect driving. The dealership in Sofia, Bulgaria found the issue, ordered a new motor from Germany and called me to bring my car in when the motor arrived two or three weeks later. It took them only 2 days to change it so it didn't cause me any trouble. It was covered by the Porsche Approved warranty that I always extend on my cars.

There was no push back from Porsche as my car was out of the new car warranty. The dealer had to provide evidence to the aftermarket warranty that the repair was necessary. They then approved the repair.
