But how can they not be monitoring social media like this forum? It's a free heads up to potential upcoming problems.

They do but its more casual and doesn't carry the same weight as number-crunched analyses coming from surveys, sales data, vehicle service data.

I don't have stats but this forum is probably low 1000's MAUs and on average fewer than 10 posting participants in a given thread/topic. So if they follow, they get qualitative data, but it's not objective data.
