No news on CarPlay 2 (which Porsche has committed to supporting in future cars), but Apple has announced that iOS 17 will bring some updates to CarPlay including:
  • SharePlay (control of audio playback by others)
  • Real-time EV charging availability/status in Maps

With the Porsche/CarPlay route planning integration, live status is a very very nice update indeed! It's funny, but I was never a CarPlay fan, yet the addition of route planning, and album art display on the Passenger screen, in the Taycan won me over. My other car is a Model Y and while I still really love Tesla's software, I do quite enjoy CarPlay in these days. Shame that "CarPlay 2" (full multi-screen takeover) will require new hardware

An interesting overview from 9to5mac regarding new CarPlay - Porsche seems to be part of the game:
https://9to5mac.com/2023/08/05/new-carplay-interface-features-release/
Porsche were named by Apple as a launch partner back when CarPlay v2 was announced at WWDC in 2022. Even with future PCM updates, I think it's unlikely that Porsche would release CarPlay v2 to previous model years. I hope I'm wrong.
I do think it's likely that people will complain about that though.
It would be fair IMO that Porsche should recoup the time and effort spent to develop support for CarPlay v2 by having it be a differentiator for new sales.

I wonder how Apple is planning on dealing with a phone driving the driver essential screen behind the wheel. Whatever about PCM Infotainment, that screen is much more regulated.

Even to the extent that if you chose to display a map in the middle "tube" – that content is "projected" there from the PCM – it is not processed by the car computer itself.

Apple must be confident that a (potentially wifi connected) consumer phone is reliable enough – or some of the essential info displays – such as current speed – will still somehow be handled by the isolated car computer – and just themed and made feel part of the wider CarPlay v2 experience.

I am very much looking forward to seeing how they handle it all.
