West Virginia Is introducing a bill to block OTA's so all updates/repairs would have to be done at the dealer. I doubt it would be very popular but you never know with lobbying, etc. what could happen. The bill covers a lot of other areas to give the dealerships more strength. This is where Tesla and other similar manufacturers sales model has an advantage. It's all under the manufactures umbrella, the dealerships are not separate.

What else would you expect from the least educated state in the country that also ranks in the bottom five for poverty level?

Who cares about well paying jobs or a quality educational system when you can spend your time introducing bills to ban over the air updates on cars??!!!!!

Idiots.

It’s a state that has zero Electrify America chargers and precious few EV chargers.

It is remarkable that WV is so EV hostile when EVs are the closest thing to burning coal to fuel your car.

There I fixed it for you.

One thing I don't get is why it seem that the burden is on the people to show why this would be bad for the people, rather than on whoever is introducing this new legislature to prove that it would in fact benefit the people. Dealers have very powerful lobbies as there is a lot of money at stake for them, so they will of course fight tooth an nail to keep the cash flowing into their pockets. No different than unions lobbying the federal democrats to give additional thousands of dollars of rebates for each EV but only if manufactured in a unionized plant. Welcome to politics, where it's all about money and influence. If you think either party is less corrupt on this, you're wrong - they sometimes take from different lobbies which on the surface align better with their ideologies, but in the end the highest bidder wins.

If WVADA wins this in WV, NADA will continue to other states with this precedent (through their respective state specific associations of course).

Personally, I believe dealers need to evolve if they want to survive. There is definitely a place for them in the ecosystem. Having bought many cars from dealers, but also been a Tesla customer for almost a decade I know the advantages and pitfalls of both systems. As much as I hated the dealer experience, once Tesla released the Model 3 and started laser focusing on profit, I started to miss the dealers. There has to be a happy medium in between.

Ahhh, West Virginia, a State where you can’t get OTA updates but you can still marry your 14 year old cousin…

Follow-up question for any WV lawyers on this forum: If two WV residents get divorced, are they still brother and sister?

I’m sure this will negatively impact the 2 EVs that are driven in WV

Again it's unlikely to pass but when you have lobbyist involved and businesses that "contribute" to the lawmakers who vote on these laws sometimes they can get passed and then one state looks at other states and says if they can do it we can too.

What bothers me is it is so anti-consumer but the dealerships don't care. It's all about making money.

Doesn’t Magnuson-Moss protect against such jackassery?
