My rims (21" range wheels) got curbed - should I repair it at an alloy shop? I heard each diamond cut repair will shave off part of the wheel and I cant do that too many times.

I used a franchise ‘The Wheel Specialist’ on my 20” diamond cut wheels as they are used by our local OPC. They did a good job but one alloy showed blistering again after less than 9 months. They acknowledged it was a combination of bad product and inexpert technician (they’d had other cases apparently). I thought this honesty and their willingness to re do the repair was excellent in times when everyone seems to try to avoid responsibility for issues. C.£114 per rim about 18 months ago. Hopefully there is a franchisee in your area and consistent policy.

Diamond cut wheels can only be ground once or maybe twice before the relief on the face is lost. If you look closely and compare with unrepaired wheels you can usually distinguish that work has been done because they have a flatter profile.

On unrepaired wheels I started to get the dreaded corrosion blistering after just 8,000 pretty gentle salt free miles and never using a pressure washer or alloy wheel cleaner. It’s inevitable apparently. Shame no one tells you that when you specify it… Porsche UK push back pretty hard against warranty claims for such corrosion.

Thanks for the info. So it's either unrepaired and face blistering or remove 1 health from0 my alloys from machining its surface. Gotta figure out the lesser evil!

I have the 20" Taycan turbo design wheels and I curbed a storm drain during a heavy rainstorm. I didn't even know it was there, since the side windows and side view mirrors were covered with water droplets.

Used the tire/wheel insurance for the repair and "yes" some of the wheel was shaved off for the repair. If it were curbed again, I would say it would no longer be repairable and time for a new wheel. Looks good from 5 feet away looking at it straight on, but the repair is easily visible up close. I would say a non-gearhead would probably not notice it though...

Possibly depends on how long you’re keeping the car and of course your ocd threshold for perfection…

They have to repair two of my Cross tourisme wheels. They sanded it and polished it. You can see it because they remove a bit of material but much better than before. They also add transparent lacker on the top.
Good repair but not as new.

The quality of repairs to diamond cut wheels is variable. The extent of the damage will influence how many times a wheel can be repaired, that’s also variable.
I’ve had cars with diamond cut wheels for about 8 years. Even undamaged, the lacquer generally lasts about 3 years from new. Once refinished, it can start to blister from about 6 months, the usual warranty period.
Painted wheels are more durable and you can add a Matt, Satin or Gloss lacquer. Some Porsche wheels are available in either a diamond cut or painted finish, so you can change to painted and keep the original look.

A good alloy workshop will be able to advise how much meat is left on the diamond turned areas. I've had recut alloys last over 3 years with no issues whatsoever (on my Aston they were £210 for a pair for a strip, recut and lacquer).

Getting quotes from mobile back of the van touch up a respray guys, they're quick to slag off diamond cut finishes. Personally I still prefer the diamond cut look.
