I had an garage extension made, which is attached to my house so the local authority required a heat alarm for fire control. Note it is a heat alarm not smoke alarm since exhaust fumes from ICE could set off a smoke alarm. I went for an Aico Ei 144RC and hard wired it to the smoke alarms in my home. It was very easy to do.

Yes, typically you'll want a heat alarm rather than a smoke detector in a garage. But there's nothing special about it beyond that. It's the same as you might have in your attic.

You probably don't want a smoke detector in any room that's not weather-tight, even if you're not parking an ICE vehicle in it.

I definitely did as a result of that Taycan that burned down a garage in Florida which still has not been explained. Mine is a heat/smoke detector.
