I know we've all be eagerly awaiting any news and a full reveal for the Cayman EV for like 4 years now. Curious, how do you all feel now that Alpine A110 EV and Caterham Project V has been confirmed (as of 2026 Vegas CES)? Do you find them to be real competitors or more niche picks that aren't worth considering?

Personally, I am very excited to see that 2027 should be the year of small electric sports EVs and that a lot of these products start coming into fruition. However, I did get a Miata to tide me over for a bit.

While obviously Porsche will blow the doors off from the dealer/service/post sale/build quality and most dailyable car. I still find the other offerings quite appealing from an engineering and lightness respect.

Cayman EV - ~3550lbs @ ~400hp. Heaviest. ~90k (+10k options) USD. Best at blending performance, luxury, and best dealer network for any inevitable issues. Could realistically be a daily driver.

Alpine A110 EV - ~2900lbs @ ~270hp. Lighter. Slower. Frugal option at ~80k USD. Alpine has some existing EV experience. Network will be new to US. Inevitable issues will be worse to deal with than Porsche, but likely better than Caterham. May be dailable, will not be as refined as Porsche.

Caterham Project V - ~2625lbs @ ~280hp. Ultra small network. May be most fun, unique style, and raw experience. Least dailyable. Inevitable issues will be a headache to fix. Must be a 2nd or 3rd car. Not even sure this thing has cup holders!

What are your thoughts on the 2027 Two-Door Sports EV roadmap?

We'll see what the Cayman EV looks like, hopefully a sleek design like the original GT4.
The Alpine is fugly and the pinched waist of the Caterham is unattractive.

The Caterham Project V looks most intresting from those, but a Cayman EV would probably outdo it from a "daily" standpoint, and at that price point, I would expect it to be capable to be a daily car.

If anything, also releasing in 2026-2027, I would much rather import a JMEV SC01 from China.
  • 32k $
  • 429 hp (320 kW) from dual 160 kW permanent magnet synchronous motors
  • 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.9 seconds
  • Top speed: 200 km/h (124 mph)
  • 520 km (323 mi) on the CLTC test cycle
  • Weight: 1,365 kg (3,009 lb), thanks to a tubular space frame chassis.
  • 18-inch magnesium alloy wheels
  • Horizontal pushrod suspension with adjustable shock absorbers.
  • Forged 7075 aluminum steering knuckles and 350 mm front brakes with six-piston calipers.
  • backed by Xiaomi money
  • "mid engine" mounted 60 kWh NMC (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) battery pack supplied by CALB

They already have the car for 1+ year testing on tracks with media hands on, including foreign media. Very well reviewed.

Even with a 5k cost to swap the charging port, and a 2k shipping cost, it would still be better than any of those. And it's track focused. And much cheaper.

It's a very "driver focused EV", no infotainment, just buttons, no maps, no nothing beside AC. So definitely not a daily car, but at that price point, it doesn't need to be.

I also think that a 90k cayman EV would be a base version, I don't see them selling one with all bells and whistles for any less than 150k.

The JMEV SC01 seems interesting, but one big caveat. It isn't legal outside of China. Complete lack of safety standards or plans to sell outside of China. So I am not sure its worth mentioning.

Untrue, Chinese car regulations are pretty much on par with EU, and they are actually ahead of EU on quite a few topics - example: they just recently regulated/banned electric door handles.

The car is full compatible with chinese road regulations - which in the case of Xiaomi SU7 and Zeeker, also made them fully complaint with EU ones.

In terms of software, chinese EVs need to make changes, for privacy and GDPR. But the SC01 has no software/no infotainment

Don't forget that Chinese EVs are still heavily subsidized by their government, and we're not paying the real price: that's just their strategy to kill jobs in our countries and bring them to their country. Total price including how it will hurts our economies is much higher. I will definitely not get one.

Wouldn’t be so sure; Xiaomi has engineering and designing office in Germany. BYD is opening manufacturing plants in Europe.

That’s creating jobs.

For all I care, best product wins. That’s true open market and global economy.

Jobs are getting cut in the thousands with or without Chinese involvement, for the sake of profit.

The ONLY car that will fit in our garage next to the Taycan GTS is the 718 Cayman or Boxster EV. Hope we see them for MY2027
