Heavy sigh..................................... I have a fried that recently said that EV production should be halted until the grid is built up, otherwise we will all be out of electricity..................... I responded by saying, 'Sometimes you do have to put the cart before the horse'. Yes, yes, we have all heard that 'the grid' is having a difficult time keeping up with the current heat wave, and here in Texas we had our own set of special problems a few winters ago. Sometimes it does take difficult events like a grid failure for the power companies and the regulators/legislators to wake up/face up to the increase in demand that is not going to go away.
Boom, exactly! I would tell such people, while we are at it, let’s halt building new houses, restarants, bars, sports stadiums, schools and hospitals to let that old grid catch up. If common sense were more common, my gosh how much less problems we’d have in the world today…

Interestingly my purchase had nothing to do with saving the planet, or combatting fuel prices (I have to save a lot gas money to pay the 200k I paid for this car). I brought based on how this thing looks, accelerates and handles - not many big ICE saloons hit 60 in 3 seconds. So arguements based around those two initial points would be lost on me :). Sure I’m not alone on this forum for the motivation as to why they actually have an EV; I guess I could claim that it offsets my carbon footprint on the other cars I own :)

I’m sure that oil companies are not helping this. There were grumblings about the Shell garage near me being replaced by a Shell EV recharge only garage (not many of those around..) but people got used to it and it promoted sales.
How many chargers did they put in?

Unfortunately here in the U.S. EVs and solar panels are likely to become a significant political flashpoint over the next decade.

In the case of solar panels, there is already a major push by California electric utilities for a special tax on houses w/ rooftop solar because such subsidies tend to go to property owners who are wealthier than average; thus the subsidies are regressive in the sense they disadvantage the less wealthy.

Similarly, new car customers wanting gas-powered vehicles (esp. SUVs and trucks) are going to find themselves w/ fewer and fewer choices given the momentum towards EVs, esp. in California.

The smart thing is to disengage like you did.

As Mark Twain once said....
'never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience'

That said, when I run into any (usually passive aggressive) comments about electric cars, I usually just say 'you obviously know a lot about them, tell me more - as its interesting learning all about them from someone who hasn't got one'.

Or 'absolutely fascinating.....so who told you these pearls of wisdom.... a man in the pub?
Cause amazingly it's complete bollocks'
How big is the guy you’re talking to?

I walked around to have a look. There is a 60 min cap (which at 175kw is enough) but it’s 59p per Kw. I don’t know if Porsche card gives you a better rate with Shell though, The lampposts here are 5kw but no time limit and 33p per kw.

Same - I bought because of the smooth performance and to stay out of the service bay.

Also, I like trying new things.

Saving the planet is just a side benefit for me, not a primary purchase motivator.

So I'm working my way back home from my road trip, and I'm charging fairly late at night when a guy running the street sweeper in the Sam's Club parking lot pulled up.

"If that thing took gas you'd be done already!"

I was on a short charge hop so I countered that I was almost done and had only been here 6 minutes.
He then pivoted to his next anti-EV talking point.

"Better hope that thing doesn't catch on fire!"

At this point I realize he was just one of those Facebook trolls in real life, so I asked if he just hated EVs, and he agreed that he did.

"I just don't like what they're doin, jackin up the gas prices to try and force people into EVs."

I disengaged at that point because there was no point trying to talk to someone this ignorant.
I would have answered him:

“Done with my wallet?”

“Agreed, if it did it might light the gas in that thing your in!”

and to his final statement, my answer would be…..

“we’ll the government had to find some way to fund the $7500 kickback their giving us!”

And then I would be glad the Taycan is very fast…. ?

It's kinda sad in a way. Like, I wish I had the free time to just say "Hey, you want to hop in the passenger seat and have me show you why I bought this?" and they squeal like a pig as I launch it. People are so concerned with being "right", that they don't even bother to think about what they really want.

Maybe just ask people what they think cars should look like in 50-100 years. If they say sticking with gas, I'd probably just mention that horse owners in the early 1900's probably said the same thing about horses. Shit, there's probably something better than EVs out there, and we should try to get there as well. I've got no idea what it will be, but if it fits my needs better, I'll buy it.

You could always start really fucking with their heads and ask "If they invented a laser gun for personal use that had less recoil, killed people more quickly, was quieter, and in more or less the same form as a handgun, but since it worked on electricity you'd have to keep it charged, would you buy one?"
