Hi there,

In February (I hope so) I will be picking my 4S and now I thinking about charger to my home. Should I buy the Mobile Charger Connect and the Porsche Charging Dock to install in the garage? Or maybe you are using another companies charger? What you will recommend?

I have been using a Gen 2 Tesla charger for the last three years. It is mounted on the post between my garage doors and it has an 8 foot cable which is perfect for a Tesla with the charging port on the left rear corner. If I had installed the charger with the 24 foot cable I would have gotten a TeslaTap adapter to use with the Taycan. I decided to go with the Grizzl-e (dumb) charger which is only $459. https://grizzl-e.com/home-products/

I ordered it direct from the factory in Canada and it was shipped at no charge. I got the Nema 6-50 plug since I only had three wires for the hard wired Tesla installation. I am installing it this weekend and will use it for a couple of weeks with the Tesla before the Taycan is delivered.

Personally, I would not opt for the Porsche mobile charger connect unless you really like the aesthetic of the Porsche charging dock. Either use the included evse (Porsche mobile charger) or obtain an evse from a third party. If you’re in North America I would suggest clipper creek or grizzle.

the new Porsche Wall Charger is an excellent choice (not the PMC+ or PMCC)

the PMC+ is hard to beat since it’s included with the car - but it’s not my personal favorite choice
the PMCC is more expensive than the Porsche Wall Charger but it’s mobile, but so is the PMC+ that is included with the car

non-Porsche options abound and most are great choices if you want a non-Porsche Option
  • clippercreek
  • chargepoint
  • Tesla Wall Chargers (you will require a TeslaTap)
  • Tesla Universal Mobile charger (you will require a TeslaTap)
  • Juicebox
  • others…
all North American EV chargers are not vendor specific - so any charger will charge both your Porsche and non-Porsche EV - I use my Tesla and Porsche chargers to charge my Bolt all the time…and my friend’s audi, neighbor’s leaf or BMW i3 - you get the idea - these chargers can charge any EV…you don’t need to match the charger to the car.

PMCC is a nice unit, albeit large, heavy and expensive. The advantage is that you can control the charging current advertised which is great when you travel with it to places where the utility power may not be rock solid. Disadvantage is that the NEMA 14-50 cable is higher gauge copper so it gets hot. If your plug also gets hot (if you have a lower quality 14-50 wall plug), this combination plus the heat given off by the PMCC itself in the enclosed space of the albeit very nice looking wall dock will cause the PMCC to overheat. You can rectify this by dialing back the advertised charge current to 30A for example.

So + 1 for PMCC for traveling, and +1 for Clipper Creek or Porsche Wall Charger at home.

I have been using the PMC+ since I picked up my car on July 1st. It has worked perfectly and as Daveo4EV said, is hard to beat since it’s included with the car.
