Ok, my dealer finally looked at the car. They said the fan noise was from "rocks and debris" on the fan. They said that the fan was operating at normal speed, but was loud because it was dirty. They claim to have fixed it by cleaning the fan (for a charge of $500). I haven't gotten the car back yet, so fingers crossed that this actually fixed it.
Interesting - I've had debris enter the cooling fan compartments twice since ownership and cleaned them out myself.

This really is a DIY job that needs minimal experience/skills if up for it - basically you're just removing a number of inner wheel liner (6+) screws depending on how much access you need. You can then inspect the fan shroud, fan blades etc and clean aswell as remove any other loose debris that may be in there (and yes, ridiculous that debris can enter so easy, or more specifically, that debris once in there can compromise operation of such a critical part of an EV!!).

EDIT: If you have the time and inclination even easier if you just remove the wheel from the relevant wheel well with car safely on a jack support -not necessary but will clearly provide for easier access.

Here is my most recent debris removal:

And here is a case where I had a more significant issue when road debris from an interstate highway hit the underside of the car cracking underlying plastic bits that happened to also attach to the front right wheel well liner - in this example I had to replace the entire inner liner BUT for only a ca $200 part ordered directly from Porsche!

Wondering if having the electronic opening charge port covers some of this vulnerability since it obstructs a lot of air flow in the area

Thanks for the update. Please let us know how the car fares during charging once you have it back as I have just encountered the same issue with my 4S. Very loud fans and heat being blown from the vents when slow charging at home (outdoors in 65 degree weather).

Hopefully the fix is as simple as your dealership indicated.
