The GTS ST has arrived at the dealer, pickup next week. Considering the protection options. Is PPF considered essential and ceramic coating? Any feedback and thoughts much appreciated.
I vote yes. For me even if it doesn’t effect resale I personally can’t stand seeing rock chips and small door imperfections from the careless idiots that damage cars in parking lots. My last car was black so it showed all these things and it really bugged me. I paid the $6k for the full body PPF for peace of mind and to hopefully have very limited damage or imperfections through my ownership. At the end of the day it’s personal choice and how much if at all these issues would bother you.

I just had it done on mine... so I'm also in the "yes" camp. No ceramic coating on the Taycan. I do have it on one GT3. I like the coating on the GT3, but I do not consider it mandatory on an expensive car. PPF almost is to me now... I wish my wife's GT3 has it, but it does not and chips are adding up over the years...

I bought my 2020 4S new, ordered it from the factory having it made to my desires. I had PPF applied in less than a week after getting her. I had film put on the entire nose (bumper, hood, fenders, headlights, and mirrors. I also had the doors and rear bumper done. The rear quarter panels and trunk lid are the only parts not covered. I did the doors because the vents in the front fenders are right behind the wheels. Small bits of gravel can kick up through the vents and hit the doors. I have had many other cars over the years that have little chips in the paint from rocks and debris. 3 years later my car still looks beautiful. It was easy math to spend almost $4,000 to invest in protecting the car that I paid $140,000 to buy. I recommend the film. The company I used offers a 10 year warranty on the film. I recommend the PPF.

If you do PPF, you will be doomed forever to hand washing your car. Mine got a blemish in the PPF which the dealer says was caused by an automatic car wash. The dealer says the blemish can’t be fixed. If they had told me this in advance, I would not have done PPF.

Automatic car wash? You must be joking! That’s reserved for ugly cars.

Try is exactly my thoughts. PPF is spendy but worth every penny if you care about the appearance of the car. You didn’t buy a Hyundai, you bought a Taycan. Why not make sure it always looks like it did from the factory.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, @Ken . I always wash my 2022 RWD by hand. I will never put it in an automatic car wash. Not even the 'touchless' washes.

FTFY. I keep my cars spotless inside and out. When I sell them I get compliments about the condition they’re in. And I’ve never condomed any of my cars.

I think the PPF industry was started by the same French guys who discovered that you could sell water to Americans for more than the price of gasoline.

I bet you have rock chips on your front bumpers and hoods.

I did full PPF. It just gives me that peace of mind, and reduces my OCD. Lot of construction in my area. And the kid with her school bag. Wife with nails.

I have only front on my other car, the BMW, and surely it's well maintained, and if i go see back, I see paint swirls. I have seen light Rock gravel chips, debris from truck go hit front on the bimmer, and surely it hit, I saw almost in slow motion as my heart skipping beat, and behold - it took it like a champ. In one place it hit round around the edge and just a small piece of PPF got weird, and still held on.

For many of the reasons already stated... I went with both. As luck would have it, major road construction started on my daily commute. I would have had much higher anxiety without PPF. And the ceramic coating has made my regular hand washing the car much more enjoyable - e.g., easier to clean and the high gloss comes right back. Less than six months into ownership... first Porsche, first EV, first car with both PPF & ceramic... couldn't be happier with my choices.

I would consider this more of an argument against using the dealer to do the install than against PPF in general. Furthermore, if you've bothered to do PPF and want an easier washing experience, wouldn't it make sense to add a ceramic on top?

I have one small nick/chip on my hood and one small one on my rear drivers side door (from my wife…), in 12,000 miles. You wouldn’t notice either one unless you went looking for them. I don’t go looking for them, so they don’t exist in my mind.

Yes, you will get a few nicks over time. Who cares? You won’t notice them unless your bending down to polish the Porsche logo on the bonnet.

What cracks me up are people who pay thousands to do PPF and then obsess over nicks in the PPF…

I just had the nose, hood and all doors coated in PPF. Parking Lot Rash is real and this should help. Lots of stone chips here too on the high speed runs down the 101.

For me, it’s not about the $. It’s about the emotional damage and the security of knowing that the car has some real protection. Not about resale, but about peace of mind.

Yep agree with much here. I don’t intend to wash the car in automatic car wash. Heard too much bad news about them. Like a previous poster - first Taycan, first Porsche, first ev. I think the piece of mind is what I desire.
