Hi

with a new car is it better to use longer charge cycles or more frequent short ones?

Ultra short charging might put more wear on the heating/cooling of the battery and be less efficient if you're starting from a very cold battery or very hot battery, but generally I don't think it matters to the car. Your home charging should be setup to handle indefinite charging, but if there was a problem with the wiring, longer charging sessions would probably stress it more than shorter ones, but to reiterate - this should not be a problem with a proper installation.

There was a thread a while back with a post from a guy who works with satellites. IIRC, he said they have found that the biggest cause of battery life degradation is big draws and fast charging and long charging periods. More frequent charges from 60%-80% was better than 20%-80%, for example. I’ll see if I can find it.

For the purpose of the Taycan, not likely to matter. A batteries life is often given as the number of complete charging cycles over its life. For instance a battery may be rated as having 500 charging cycles. Where a charge cycle is defined as the complete discharge/charge of the battery. From the literature, how you get there appears to not matter. For instance two charges of say to 40% is the same as one charge of 80%. But the rate at which you charge and discharge the battery can have an effect.

This is the link to read. ?
Most authorative contributer I have come across on the subject and what I have taken as Gospel since I read it.
He could be completely full of sh!t but because he mentioned “satellites”, we all take his word for it. ? But I also take it as gospel.

Thanks for your replies. I am using shorter cycles for now. Indeed going from 55+ to 85 using a charging profile.

I guess I will continue to use this method if possible.

To survey properly you need to be clear on the definition of a charging cycle otherwise this survey is subjective.

I should have used “session” instead of cycle. What I meant to say is either you do top up charging (shorter session) or you actually wait until your battery only has 10-15% left and then charge it back to 85-90%

You can't tell.
If you want to know you should have a null-test: a battery that undergoes the exact same conditions while driving, like temperature, driving style, ambient temperature etc.
One battery having short cycles and the other longer ones.
Only then you can say something which was better.
Exactly, "was"...
I wouldn't worry too much and just enjoy using this piece of machinery called Taycan. ?

See attachement.. it shows battery degradation for different charging for li-ion batteries.
as know by most, it’s best to keep these batteries as much between 20-80% soc as possible, but it’s even better to charge more often. There’s also practicality and other factors that play a part in this.

Note that this test was done with a 3.3V nominal voltage cell, which is NOT a standard Li-ion cell, that chemistry is 3.7/3.8V, so findings do not always transfer.
It's also not representative cuz you need to normalize it for work done in real life, not a laboratory or, like I said before, with a null-test.

To get it in perspective: 4000 charge cycles is 1.200.000 km (avg. 300 km*/charge).
I wouldn't worry too much...

*including average degradation.
