I know there are plenty of people who have the “leave your phone in your pocket/purse while driving” philosophy and there are also plenty of people who believe “I want to mount my phone within view and charge it”. This post is for the second community of people.

I have gone through several types of car mounts for my iPhone 15 Pro (6.1” screen). I was trying to avoid the following in a phone mounting system:
  • 3M adhesive,
  • mounting on the leather center console,
  • using a suction cup on the windshield or other screens,
  • obstruction of *ANY* part of my view out the windows,
  • the awkward mounts that attach to the rearview mirror.
So, I decided to find a mount that would attach to the vent that is located left of the steering wheel (US model). I went through 7 versions of these mounts and finally found ONE design that I liked and find to be rock solid. As you can see from the photos (sorry about some of the blurry photos!), it has a “tripod” base that allows it to extend beyond the vent, but still fits nicely within the confines of the glossy finish. As a bonus, it sticks out far enough so that my phone does not hit the black leather dash that overhangs it and I can angle my iPhone perfectly for me in the driver’s seat.

Since this base has a “standard” ball mount, you could attach whatever magnetic (or cradle) phone mount you already have. It works really well and I recommend it!

Here is a link to the base with a non-charging magnetic mount: https://amzn.to/4eGh884 (I got this and used my own phone mount)
And this is a link to the base with a MagSafe charging mount: https://amzn.to/3U9CLph

And as for wiring the mount, I would recommend following the path outlined in this post: https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/my-3d-printed-taycan-phone-holder.6478/post-328766 Porsche Taycan The best Taycan phone mounting solution I could find IMG_8636 Porsche Taycan The best Taycan phone mounting solution I could find DSC_0248 Porsche Taycan The best Taycan phone mounting solution I could find DSC_0246 Porsche Taycan The best Taycan phone mounting solution I could find DSC_0243 Porsche Taycan The best Taycan phone mounting solution I could find IMG_8638 Porsche Taycan The best Taycan phone mounting solution I could find IMG_8637

I prefer the Proclip mount for the center console to the left of the PCM. You can slide the mount up or down and still have an unobstructed view of the PCM on the center console. This position also allows the USB port in the center console to be used with a flat cable which allows you to close the lid on the two flat cables (one for the driver & one for the passenger). I don’t like mounts which block or deflect air from any of the vents and even though the mount shown does mount securely it requires you to route the USB cable from the center console or direct wire into a 12v line under the dash or to the fuse box.

I prefer the proclip mount which keeps the phone close to right handed drivers like myself but does not block the view of the PCM on the center console. This placement also allows you to use flat USB C cables in the center console to power your phone as well as the passenger’s phone without the console lid crushing the cables. Using the center console usb ports also allows your phone to connect to the infotainment system instead of using wireless which I prefer.
I could see why left handed drivers would want to mount the phone to the left vent but I don’t like to block any air vents and I don’t want to go to the extra trouble & expense to install a usb cable directly to the fuse panel or tie into a 12V line under the left side of the dash to accommodate the left side mount.
For right handed drivers mounting the phone to the left of the steering wheel would be very awkward.
Many times you need to or it’s easier to enter new destinations on your phone rather than have to reach for the PCM which is further away so having the phone within closer reach to the driver is better than having to lean forward to reach the pcm on the dash when choosing destinations, fuel stops or contacts which is easier to do on the phone at arms reach without leaning forward.
You could also use the proclip center console mount with a magnetic holder to reduce the width of the overall phone in the mount.

By the way, the proclip does not actually touch the leather center console surface. It clips in the front & back seams perfectly so you can adjust it up or down so it is perfectly within arms reach. I leaves no marks on the leather at the front facing seam.

No downsides so far! It's out of the way, but somehow still easy to peek at if needed ... and I actually rarely need it since I use CarPlay. And it doesn't really block much airflow based on the tripod design. I think it's in a perfect spot compared to the center console or anywhere higher up on the dash. And super easy to route the cable to the armrest too (see the link in the original post).

There are other mounts made specifically for the Taycan, but (for me!) I didn't want to give up a cupholder or mount in the middle of the car ... somehow takes away from the originally intended aesthetics. But beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

Just wanted to clarify that for right-hand drive cars you could use the mount on the right side vent (i.e. to the right of the steering wheel). This would keep the whole center of the car clutter-free.

Unfortunately my world & business revolves around my phone so it has muscled its way into the most advantageous spot in my vehicles which is at my right hand where it rests. I do love the idea of a completely unobstructed center console but the only time I experience an unobstructed center console is in the 100+ days of rental cars I’m in each year where my phone sits in my lap, in a cup holder or a magnetic vent mount. Maybe when I retire I can dream of an unobstructed center console… On the same token it is my iPhone which is at the center of my financial success which allows me to afford my Taycan and other luxuries so I would never upset my phone by putting her in my pocket or off to the side. It’s bad enough she’s glued to my ear when I’m not driving…

This one is probably the best option as it looks like Porsche put it in, uses MagSafe to keep it secure and wirelessly charges:

I love this one but I didn’t have this option on my 2021. The wireless charging was in the center console which was a non starter since it would be useless once my wife put more & more “things” in the center console.
I’m wondering if this is an upgrade to my 2021 or is only for 2024 & newer Taycan’s?

This is not made by Porsche (although it looks like Porsche made it and put it in). Click the link to see the website where I got it. The best part is no wires are visible. Pretty slick.

Perfect when I’m by myself…
On long trips I’d have to give up the remaining cup holder if my wife is with me…. but perfect for single guys who only really need one cup holder…

It works well if you use CarPlay but I occasionally have issues with CarPlay cutting out so I have to use my phone directly. If I were left handed I would mount it over the vent on the left as well…

For an aftermarket product, this is quite nice! But I doubt Porsche would have considered this positioning as the phone blocks direct access to the lowest buttons on the middle screen … and blocks their Taycan logo! ?
