The last handful of cars have all had Apple CarPlay, but I have just never used it. I am now giving it a shot and overall I like it. That said… Running into an issue where if I leave my car playing from the car’s radio or the car’s SiriusXM, the next time I get back in, it plays that source for a couple of seconds until my car connect wirelessly to CarPlay. Then CarPlay takes over as the media source and turns off the radio / SiriusXM. I don’t like that. If I leave my car when it’s playing SiriusXM, I want to get back into my car and have it to continue to be playing the same channel from when I left.

Is there a workaround for this? I know it is a first world problem, but right now I have to hit the music icon again and re-tap SiriusXM / radio source.

It happens frequently on all of my VW-based cars, not so much on my other CarPlay vehicles. There was one post that suggested that setting up an automation on the iPhone will solve it. It hasn't worked for me, however.

Yeah I just tried the automation (found from another thread). Automation link here: https://www.guidingtech.com/how-to-stop-music-from-automatically-playing-in-car/

Did not work. What it did was it stopped Apple Music, for instance, from automatically playing from where you left off when you last left the car playing said Apple Music. But it did not stop the issue of CarPlay booting up and taking over from the radio / SiriusXM as the source.

Any other ideas?

This is the one thing that I hate about my Taycan. I shouldn’t have to scroll through menus every time I get in the car to get back to the radio. CarPlay should not start unless I tell it to do so.

What is the point in having car play if it does this?

Beats me. After giving it a couple of day try… I just disabled it and am back to my old way of operating. 90% of my listening is SiriusXM so having to turn that on every time I get in my car (albeit just a tap of a couple of buttons) after CarPlay loads was just too annoying for me.

If I predominantly used Apple Music or Spotify instead of SiriusXM, I likely wouldn’t care too much as I’d WANT that to load every time I got in car.

I gave it a fair try! Just not for me (yet). Some bugs to work out

You write “yet” but what can CarPlay do that an old bloke like me might want? Can’t think of anything myself.

I'd say that most people I know who use CarPlay exclusively (it's a lot):
  • Waze and Google Maps navigation (admittedly superior to PCM unless u need charging station battery pre-heating synchronization)
  • Calendar destination automation (with Apple Maps)
  • iMessage notifications and announcements
  • A Better Route Planner navigation
Most of them also generally seem to prefer the UI for CarPlay over the PCM's media interface. Totally understand the frustration, though. I will note that people who want to use CarPlay exclusively have a very similar problem in that CarPlay launches but does not start playing music until you press a button!

Cool find. I never would have thought of that. I'm surprised it didn't work though.

I use CarPlay every day. It turns itself on and auto-plays whatever I was playing last. No buttons. It’s perfect for me and I use Apple Music too so integration works well for me. I also use Audible and if I’ve been listening to a book that will auto-play.

I will say that I have been using the PCM nav as I’ve found it accurate and I like the info in range etc it comes up with.

Can you listen on digital radio through the phone, in which case it will auto-play if it’s the last used music?

Meaning SiriusXM from CarPlay instead of the tuner built-into the car? I’m sure I could, but would be using cellular data and think I would lose steering wheel control to change channels as well (with the built in radio controls, you can scan channels using the right gauge on the instrument cluster). Really feels like a “choose your battles” type of situation, ya know?

I’ve an unlimited contract, so I guess data never occurs to me ??‍♂

understood about button, the steering wheel one let’s you hit ‘next’ in CarPlay, not sure how it would work on radio
