I’ve just tried it… ? my 71 plate car isn’t due to have its tax renewed until this July but doing as you suggested works and my tax isn’t now due until March 26.
The price was indeed £0

I guess the number of owners who frequent fora like this or Pistonheads is relatively small.

I also suspect governments worldwide rely on electorates not talking to each other
