Had a second test drive today (4s CT on 21" wheels).

Was a tad disappointed that Taycan generally allowed noticeably more traffic and road noise intrusion than my steel sprung A7 TFSI. Only on the very smoothest roads (one short section in 10 miles driving) - and under acceleration, did the Taycan have a slight edge over the A7 with no engine noise - not that the engine noise in the A7 is very intrusive.

I asked, and the test car did not have sound insulated glass. Would there be a significant benefit?

many thanks

Figure out whether it is your own tire noise that is causing the problem. If so I don't think insulated glass will help much with that. You need to pick quieter tires (usually smaller, all-season). That being said, I would still pick insulated glass for the other noise-reducing benefits. (It doesn't reject heat as much as I expected though.)

Thanks Tay Tay - That makes sense.

I figured most of it must have been tyre noise from the Taycan since it went very quiet on a short section of new tarmac close to houses (I assumed it was lo-noise tarmac). But there was also no other traffic on that section too.

Cheers

I test drove a CT with the insulated glass and 21’s. I found it to be really quiet, but the sales guy still recommended me to go for the 20 inch wheels as I ordered the Burmester (to get the full benefit of it) as the car allegedly becomes MUCH quieter with these. I did, and I also opted for the insulated glass.
Not sure what my own opinion is worth though as I currently drive a Tesla Model 3 Performance. ?

Haha! Thanks Mr. R -

Yes, agree, the sensible option is 19-20s (range, comfort and noise), but we will be going for painted wheels of some sort (body colour, gloss black, aurum - according to the car colour we choose) - and sadly these are only available on 21s.

I am also considering after-market wheels and tyres to get over that. Can't understand why they don't offer paint options for 20s etc.

cheers

I think great insights can be attained by observing the interior noise levels while stopped at red lights at some noisy intersections. Test drive and make these observations in both glass-versions, and contrast.

I've only tried the non-insulated once, but the additional interior noise level was apparent at every red light.

By contrast, in the insulated it's oh-so-quiet. Exterior sounds don't transmit well through the windows or pano. However, be aware that sound can transmit through other parts of the Taycan, and resonant frequencies will... resonate.

Does anyone know added weight of insulated glass option?
Having looked fairly closely my guess is the difference is small, or even the insulated glass is lighter since overall the window thickness is similar but the insulated looks "double glazed" so may well have an air layer.
