Power used is force times speed so in power terms the loss is proportional to speed cubed.
I don’t think power is relevant to range in that case. What we really care about is energy and while the power is higher for higher speed, the time for distance is proportionally lower so the same energy for distance.

As you stated just before that, the increased drag force is the main culprit.

There’s also a small energy expenditure for the acceleration to a higher speed, but it’s negligible in the context of the whole trip, especially considering it’s partially recup’d on a later deceleration.

I am not sure. Range depends on kW left in the battery and kW IS power.

Agreed.
Plus, there is no coasting and recuperation, when climbing uphill.
So, keeping 90mph takes (much) more energy, than driving at 70mph.

I honestly wouldn’t be too hard on your self about this and blame the lack of a charging infrastructure.

We are being pushed to believe electric cars are the future but let me tell you we are FAR from that. Between only decent mileage on these cars, hardly enough charging stations, 2 hours to charge in cold weather at a fast charging station if one is even near you, we are not anywhere close to this so called electric revolution.

I just wanted to say no you have done no damage to the battery. The poor range is from the last trip in accounting probably for the cold and elevation changes. You will see it return to normal after driving in flatter and warmer terrains.

you don’t want to leave the battery at 0 or 100 for long periods of time, think days not hours.

I have been down to as low as 4 miles of range.

Maybe this is where you are getting confused. Range depends on energy left in the battery which we typically express in kWh. The rate of expenditure (energy/time) is power, typically expressed in kW. An increase in expenditure proportional to a decrease in time will not affect range. So, the extra velocity term to get the cube is not relevant for range.

I make the trip between San Diego and Las Vegas quite frequently. The first leg of the eastbound trip is from my apartment in San Diego to an Electrify America in a little town called Hesperia up in the mountains. The trip is 130 miles.

We were almost idiots together. I coasted into Hesperia on Sunday. My car showed plenty of range and after punching it all the way up the pass I had 11 miles to get to Walmart as well. I pulled in with 6 miles to go. I do hope you were greeted with the amazing welcome that I was. I’m not big on talking to people and ended up with a group of 15 asking me questions.
For giggles:
1. I love your Ferrari
2. Are you single
3. How much was it
4. What’s the payment
5. What do I do for a living
6. Do I want to come stay at a river house for the week(he was 70, retired, driving a vet)
7. Can I go for a ride with you when you’re done charging
8. Am I vaccinated? I must be because no self respecting blue collar American can afford this car. (That’s the actual question/comment verbatim)
9. Did I know they make blue camo because I would look good in that with my blue car

For anyone that has never been blessed with visiting the high desert, you’re not going to believe a word of this. I assure you that it is a special place and not worth a visit.

in my early days of tesla ownership I ran it down so low I received this message.
in the taycan because of the charging conflicts in the car I once got down to about 3 miles of charge when I pulled intp the charger

BWAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHHa. This is hilarious. I had to stop at the Barstow Walmart a couple of times to charge while on road trips. I can never bring myself to go in since the parking lot alone is enough to say "I don't need any of that today!!"

You should add rural Utah, Western Colorado, and the midwest to "special places" not worth a visit.

We appreciate you taking one for the team. As for lowering the chassis: when I go into range mode, the car automatically lowers. So I’d imagine it would have bought you a few miles.
I always drive in the lowest suspension setting - not just for looks. (S. FL. roads are wonderful)

Closing Questions and Thoughts
When I left San Diego, I had a 70 mile surplus (200 miles of range to cover 130 miles of distance) but that 70 mile surplus turned out to be a six mile deficit! That's a pretty big miscalculation. I assume the factors involved were: (a) 90+ cruising speed, (b) net uphill from 0 to 3,100 ft, (c) 45 degree temperature. Which of these is the most important factor? I'm not sure. The range estimator had no idea what my average speed was going to be, nor the fact that a major uphill climb was imminent so I can't really blame the tech. But is there some mathematical formula I can manually use myself to scale down the estimated range based on elevation differential, intended speed, etc.? Nothing exact of course but something rough maybe? I can't lie. Being able to drive only 124 miles on a near full charge kind of bums me out. :(
Thanks for the trip report! If you use abetterrouteplanner.com You can get a much more accurate estimate as it takes into account weight in the car, elevation changes, ambient temperature, intended speed, etc. I always use this for planning my trips. At minimum it tells you how much you need to charge to to get to the next charger, which is invaluable for not overcharging (ie wasted time).

My response was only going to make sense for the CA and NV members. Barstow/Hesperia are two peas in a pod.

Meanwhile, I’m currently awaiting my blue camo dress to be delivered. If I put on my new dress and cruise into Western CO in my “Ferrari” I might catch a 65 year old instead of the 70 year river rat.

Since this is the internet and many people are sensitive to certain remarks.. I mean no harm, I’ll order you some camo to match your Taycan as an apology if I hurt any feelings.

Haha!! Shoot.... I laughed out loud at this too...... friggin hilarious.......
This car does attract a lot of attention on its own, let alone with an attractive woman behind the wheel....... an attractive woman behind the wheel of an expensive, foreign, exotic, ELECTRIC car in the DESSERT in a WALMART just sends people into a frenzy..... lmao......

Wow! As already stated, thank you for sharing. As a fellow "speeder" (>90mph...again, it's a Porsche), I have been surprised/disappointed in the impact speed has on the range. I'm typically cruising at high speeds, and it is scary how fast range drops. I have yet to take a long trip because, based on my driving, I would be stopping every 150 miles to charge.
