I could use some advice from the forum. I've had a deposit down for a GTS ST since january, signed contract at MSRP but no allocation, and who knows when i'll get one. my best guess is 12 months out but could be anywhere from 6-18 months. I also have a dealer build RWD at MSRP that arrives in two weeks. Its heavily optioned with things i like but also some bling and EV things that i feel are unnecessary. config below (but its a 2022, so its $120,820 sticker).

questions:

1) the max residual MSRP is $113k for RWD. am i throwing money away if i get this car and plan to only keep it for a year? or will resale on a build like this be pretty good given the current supply situation?

2) is it better to get this one now, and then trade up to GTS ST, or just wait? i'm thinking if its a year or more out we're close to a mid-cycle refresh, there is the possibility of new carplay coming in late '23, and and and....

the flip side is im sure if i get the RWD i'll get an allocation 2 weeks later.

For me, it would depend on what I’m driving now and how badly I want it get into something else.

If I was okay with what I’m driving now, I would wait.

If I really wanted into the Taycan, I’d probably get what’s available and see what my options are going forward.

AFAIk, the $7500 tax credit is still in effect also, so consider that as well.

If you're not convinced your driving habits will work well with an EV, it certainly makes sense to check out the RWD first. Heck, maybe it even convinces you that you don't need the GTS.

In terms of the finances, with the downturn I don't know that I'd expect the resale value to hold as well as it had the past couple years. If buying the GTS is dependent on the resale value of the RWD holding, I wouldn't count on it.

i'm in a model 3 AWD right now with acceleration boost, so quicker than a 4S. i've test driven a 4S and was like, if im going to spend that kind of $$ it should be quicker, so have heart set on GTS. i rented a RWD last week for a couple days and while less zip off the line, i was impressed overall.

re: tax credit definitely factors into the calculation. who knows what the car market holds. really trying to get a read on a base model with $35k of options...

one more nugget that popped up last night is the rumour that chalk is no longer available after this fall. maybe that helps the case? the chalk, big rims and black accents is a beautiful build.

The only question I'd ask myself is that given you want an ST, does the sedan meet your space/practicality needs? If so I'd take it.

Chalk is definitely a bonus at this point, as you pointed out.

The RWD is amazing. Keep it in sport mode it will tick all the boxes. The world is going EV, get on the train now.

I’m currently in a M3P and it’s definitely faster in straight line performance than my upcoming 4S ST. I also test drove a GTS and couldn’t notice much difference between that and the 4S in straight line acceleration. If you really want your Taycan to be quicker I think you’ll need to step up to the Turbo model.

I agree with others here, I had a highly optioned ($25+k) RWD dealer demo fall into my lap for sticker (500 miles, 2021 MSRP and CPO warranty + the $7,500 tax credit) so I couldn't say no. I had a deposit on a CT but after driving the RWD and saving $17k vs. my CT spec, I couldn't be happier. The RWD is plenty of speed for the road and the steering is great, very fun to drive and I suspect it will do well in the mountains of NC/TN once I can drive again (recovering from knee surgery). I say get the RWD, it could be 18 months before you see an ordered car right now.

I would keep the deposit on the ST and see how things transpire. I suspect that you wouldn't regret either keeping the RWD and selling the ST (for profit), or trading the RWD in for the ST. No wrong answer, just depends on how you value your bang for buck.

That is a very nice spec RWD. I do not see any unwanted options whatsoever. Also the color is desirable. I would get the RWD and if anything trade it in for GTS when the time comes. To be honest, you might fall in love with RWD and decide against the GTS. I think RWD with nice options like this build is the perfect overall car.

No one has mentioned… if the market drops and the RWD depreciates, how much would your model 3 depreciate? That too will drop in value versus selling now. I suspect a new RWD won’t drop for at least 6-9 months, so I would probably go for it if you like the Taycan
