I am looking at you @daveo4EV . I said no existing Taycan would ever charge at a Tesla Supercharger and you said I was blowing smoke.

I came to this conclusion as soon as Tesla said they were opening their standard to everyone to get those Biden bucks. Does this meet the test under H.R. 5376 (let me know if I quoted the wrong program) Might have to be litigated, but Tesla isn’t selling Taycans or any other CCS car. Charity doesn’t come into this calculation.

For additional information on the topic google NACS vs CCS

We are not talking about Europe where the EU has mandated CCS2 as the standard. North America (read the US followed by Canada) isn’t going to do this.

Probably most people were thinking that Tesla might add a CCS adapter to their chargers or maybe some sort of adapter to fit between the Tesla charger and the CCS port on the Taycan.

Let’s look at the issues. Fitting an adapter is a pretty kludgey solution. Does anyone think that with the current and voltages involved this is ever going to get past the regulators as a standard?

Next let’s put CCS cables on the Tesla adapters. Maybe, apparently, they have been tested, but do you think Elon wants a bunch of non Tesla’s clogging up his stations along with the associated expense? And why would he improve the position of his competition? But he would like those Biden bucks. SO DOES HIS PROPSAL FIT WITHIN THE LAW?

So while most are playing checkers, somebody is playing chess. If Tesla’s proposal fits the law, guess what? No existing Taycan will ever charge at Tesla SuperCharger.

What do you think @daveo4EV ?

I still think you are wrong - time will tell - it's not that hard - and there are superchargers already permitted and being built that require 50% access to non-Tesla's as a condition of funding

I think several things:

1. there will be an adapter
2. future superchargter sites will have a mix of Tesla Native and CCS
3. Tesla will charge more for non-Tesla's
4. eventually this will all be forgotten.

no doubt Elon is gaming hte system, but that doesn't mean existing CCS vehicle's won't function at superchargers…Elon can game the system and still allow non-Tesla's to charge at his sites…both can be true.

happy to buy you lunch if I'm wrong by the end of 2024…

it will happen.

4 sites already planned that require 50% access to non-Tesla vehicles…

Most notably, one of the conditions for a successful grant involved a minimum of 50% of connectors being CCS standard. This means Tesla will probably be adding a CCS adapter at every stall, a project we have previously reported on called the Magic Dock

Tesla apparently is exploring a business model for their charging stations involving restaurants, so opening up the chargers to other EV brands will bring in more restaurant customers.

NACS is winning cause it's a better design - Taycan already _CAN_ charge at Tesla supercharger w/MagicDock adapter - and now other car manufacturers are following suit because the CCS connector physical design is flawed from a reliability, ergonomic, and manufacturing complexity points of view…

NACS is simpler, better ergonmics, more reliable, and more cost effective - I don't care what protocols you run - you can still run CCS electrical protocols on a NACS physical plug - but yeah you'll have to update the vehicle's on board software to handle that - shouldn't be that difficult.

the voltages and such have proven to not be that big a deal and our Taycan's "already work" with no hardware or software changes - my 2020 Taycan Turbo charges just fine at the Scott's valley, CA supercharger with the MagicDock CCS adapter…

it's effectively over- and I expect EA can add NACS plugs to the end of their cables and their reliablity will improve because the connector will be far less likely to break when it's dropped…taking the station offline…
